I have a psychotic pomeranian that is 14 years old. The reason I say she is psychotic is because she won't walk on smooth floors, she won't drink out of stainless steel dog bowls, and if the water level is not where she wants it she will bark until we come and fix it. Oh yes, and she won't eat off of a plate if there is a fork or spoon on it.

Do you count children as pets? :) If so, 3 monkeys. If not, none for us. We aren't really pet people. Please don't hate us for that. :) However, if you ask my oldest son, Logan, he'll tell you mom and dad aren't pet people, but he is.
If it's worth anything, we have had a few hermit crabs before.

;) OK, this is Roberta, I'm new here today. We have had pigs, yes we named them. My parents named theirs 'porkchop', we named ours 'hamhock' and asked our 6 yr old granddaughter what she would name there pig, she said she really liked bacon so, she said I will name our pig 'breakfast'!! LOL We have three dogs Buddy, Chomper and Bosco, two cats Callie and Coal, three cows Betty Boop, Charlotte and Baggy Sue and a cow calf Buttercup, that we got to see be born. How fantastic is that?? We had a horse named Barbie but she lives with the neighbors and four other horses where she is much happier. thanks for helping me with my insomnia!!;)

John, I'm so jealous of your tanks! They're gorgeous! Saltwater, right? We really wanted to start a s/w tank, but we were afraid we wouldn't be able to keep up with the upkeep on it with both of us working full time. We were told that it's very difficult to maintain and hard to start. :(

John...I love your salt water tank! I have a 120 gal. that I just converted back to Cichlids. Also have a 75 gal and 58gal. As a scuba diver I prefer to see them in the wild!
In the past we've had just about everything. I do miss my parrots. We had a Double Yellowhead Amazon for 16 years and a Ghana African Gray for 14 yrs, I hand fed them both. We boarded them for vacation a couple years ago at a very reputable bird aviary. Unfortunately that wasn't safe enough, Grace the gray caught some sort of bacterial infection and died 6 months later. Rosie, the amazon, had such a change in personality from a sweet, affectionate lap buddy to a hateful, vicious enemy! We tried for two years but she wanted absolutely nothing to do with either of us. She's now with a breeder raising babies.
We currently have 2 Chihuahua's, Chico is 3yo and definately his Daddy's boy. Sophie is 1yo.and a Mama's girl! 2 outside cats, both strays that wondered up and stayed around.

Just a cat that was mine and my daughter's, but since I am away so much, she lives with my daughter now, and I just visit.
Just one outside dog...Golden Retriver....We got him when my son was 3 years old(he's 9 now) and of course we let him come up with a name.. He started calling him "Funny Head" and it just stuck with the poor dog so that's his name...
We still laugh about it all the time...

I would love to have a dog instead of a husband :p I live in an apartment, but I want more pets, my cat lives with Grandma D. since Grandpa D. passed. My cat sneakers keeps her company and somewhat sane :D I also want to set up my fish tank again, I'd really like salt water but fresh water is cheaper and easier to maintain a small tank (big tanks are always better for salt water)

We have two dogs. A very large Bernese Mtn Dog named Duchess who is 5. She is getting kind of frail so we are unsure how much longer she will be with us. We also have a very active 1 year old Boxer named Duke. We were hoping he keeps Duchess young.

I have one cat now. We bought him in MI from a well known Ragdoll cattery. We drove over the to pick him up on our 1st wedding anniversary weekend. He's such a great cat. I always wanted a Ragdoll after reading about what a special breed they are and everything about them. Everything they say about that breed is true. This cat is more like a dog the way he follows us around, comes running to the door to greet us when we come home, has to be in the same room as me constantly and I just love how their fur feels more like rabbit fur than a cat.
My husband took this picture about two years ago when Baby decided the Santa hat we had layed on the couch while decorating was a nice comfy spot to take a nap. I LOVE this picture and how the sparkles in the hat shine.

What a beautiful cat. I have only ever seen one once before when I had my pet store. And I do remember the fur being quite different. Think I got one special for a customer request so he did not stay in the store very long.
That doesn't surprise me at all. We had to pay to reserve ours the minute she knew her breeder cat was pregnant because they go so quickly. They're just awesome cats with such a different personality than any other cat I've ever owned. He's very smart too and knows what time my husband will be calling me on his way home from work because he'll come into my room if he's not there already and meow at me and if we don't start heading to bed by about 9:30pm he sits in the doorway of my sewing room and starts meowing. He knows somehow what time we do things.
very very nice kitty !!
Thanks. He's my baby and my shadow too.
In June this past summer he was fascinated with this mirror I had on one of my sewing tables. He would lay there staring at himself but I caught him actually watching me in the mirror and then another with him playing with the other kitty in the mirror. I was laughing so hard at him that day. He's such a clown sometimes.

You're right about the Maine Coon breed. They are the only breed larger than the Ragdoll if I recall. Everyone that visits our house tries to steal Baby because they fall in love with him.
I have 3 siamese. Two are Seal points ( they are the dark brown- have a seal color to them), and one is a blue point (he is a grey-blue color). We lost a seal point this year to renal failure, he was such the lover- so in pain we started searching catteries. In an effort to replace the one lost, we got 2. We have 2 males and 1 female. The oldest male was the brother of the one that passed, and he searched the house for weeks looking for his brother- it was heart breaking.
Siamese get a bad wrap sometimes, as crying a lot, and being mean. I have yet to have that experience. The female however, is a bit shy- and not interested in loud noises.
Not sure how a thumbs down got there- sorry. It is not reflecting anything- but loose typing....
StitchinGrandma
11-16-2007, 08:35 PM
I love the markings on Siamese, but I'm a medium to long haired cat person mostly. My kids did have a "mutt" short haired black cat but before Baby we also had a Seal Point Himalayan that was gorgeous. He was a retired Grand Champion winner I was lucky enough to buy for only $15.
Too funny about the thumbs down. HA! So? If that's in your own post are you saying your post is bad since you never quoted anyone? ROFLMAO!

My grandmother had 4 siamese 3 Lilac point and one seal. If they are not foxed they are more vocal. Also the older they got the more spoiled they got and so the cryed or talked more and more LOL. One only let Grandpa hold her and grandma could only rub her as she walked by. If Grandm tried to pick her up she cried like you were torturing her lol and grandpa would say oh baby is she hurting you. And the cat would talk back to him real loud and cry !

I have two dogs (a silky/yorkie mix and a schnauzer/terrier mix), and a cat (black with white markings). All are 12 and older. The schnauzer/terrier is blindish, and slow moving.
The cat is the oldest, and he's ridiculous! He acts like a shepard to the pups! He follows us up the street, and if the dogs get into the street too far; Oliver (the cat) runs out and steers them back to the side of the street!

We have 9 cats (5 male and 4 female)....the 2 oldest live in my sewing room (I refer to them as the geriatric cats at 18 and 12 and both are pure black) we also have 3 male and one female that are litter mates their names are Edgar, Allen, Poe and Annabelle Lee. Their mother is our calico named Sneak Sneak and then we have 2 other black cats in the mix.
We also have a single dog, a white Bull Terrier with a black patch on one eye. His name is Max and he looks just like Spuds Mackenzie (of Bud Light fame from the 80s).

We have a border collie mix named Jack. He is probably about 8 years old now. Our second dog belonged to a neighbor and she started spending so much time over here that we asked if she could just move in permantly. She didn't have any kids at her house anymore and they just let her roam during the day and tied her up at night. She gets to sleep inside at night and come through the doggie door whenever she wants. Macy lives the good life here. She is a beagle mix of some sort. She also doesn't roam the neighborhood anymore. Jack and Macy lay out in the yard like they are retired.

We have a little Mutt named Molly:) She is an outside dog, but wouldn't have it any other way. The only time she comes inside is when it is raining:)
I have my two baby kitties, BP and Meatwad. Bp is the older fat cat and she is pretty mellow. Meatwad is only about 6 months old and is a nutcake. She was a proposed birthday present that turned into a rescue case. It is a very sad story but I do not want to bring the board down. Lets just say that from the way she runs from one end of my house to the other you would never know how sick she was at one point.

We have a border collie mix that is just plain crazy. Whenever we pull out of the driveway, he chases his tail and goes nuts chasing after us. We also have a beagle mix that was a neighbors. Her people would let her roam loose during the day and chain her up in the garage at night. We just let her hang out with us. She loves to be around the kids and Jack, our other dog. I just went over one day this spring and asked if Macy could live with us. That was that. It was his daughter's dog and she had gotten married and moved away.
Macy lives the good doggie life now. She comes and goes as she pleases and sleeps inside now.:)

Oh yeah I did not intentionally go out and get 6 guinea pigs. I adopted one from a friend whose mama had a litter. I got the mama, actually. then 3 weeks later my friend found out her kids were allergic to the piggies. She had two left she needed to get rid of, the dad and one son. So I took them. 2 weeks after that I figured out the mama was expecting again!! That happened before I got her. When she delivered she had the 3 cutest little baby piggies ... so I kept them also. But now the dad got into the cage with the mama again and so we're expecting again. Oh my! I've got it taken care of he can't get near her anymore.

I am the type who would actually prefer no pets at all. Please don't throw stones. We never had any growing up. I am not equipped to handle them....the care and maintenance.
We currently have three goldfish. I am amazed they have not jumped out of their tank for lack of attention.
We do well on fish.....they last a long time. Everyone else tells me theirs do not. It must be the special diet I feed them. That would be when I think of it every 3 or 4 days.
Of course it is my son who wanted fish. Of course he does not feed or clean the tank.
His second grade teacher brought in a pet adoption agency for an extracurricular....and now he needs a dog. He'll take care of it. He'll pick up his clothes and put away his toys......

We have two 4-legged children - Sophie is a 4-year old 90-pound German Shepherd and Bella is a 2 1/2-year old 70-pound Yellow Lab. Sophie is my smart child, and Bella is my extremely goofy child. We like to call her "special". My husband and I do not have children yet, so these are basically our children. They pretty much go everywhere with us. I do not know what we would do without them - I know we'd be extremely bored and unentertained...
Carlene, I am so sorry for your loss. Pets open parts of our hearts that humans can never touch. I hope you will find peace - I can't imagine how hard this is for you...you are in my thoughts...
This took about 30 shots to get them to both look at the camera - this pic is over a year old - Bella is a little bigger now...

Carlene, sew sew sew sorry for the loss of sparky, beautiful and you can see happiness in his eyes.* Enjoy the memories, I fear the day that I loose one of my paps. Part of the reason for buying that particular breed was they have a lifespan of 18 to 21 years.
Bella and soffie look to be quite a handful, that is a very cute photo of the pair, thanks for sharing.

Yes, Sparky's time with us was short! He is a full breed Dalmatian I have read they were the most misbread breed of dogs once the 101 Dalmaians movies started.
Their life span has shorten because of it!
I still vividly remember the day this picture was taken not long ago. I was attempting to finish making the bed while someone certainly spoiled was resting. He just looked up at me with his ears perked up like, what? It was like ....you must make it now?
I am so grateful i
n turned into a Kokak moment since it is one of my favorites! Yes life is now totally different without him and working around his schedule! LOL
You girls brought tears to my eyes! Yes you do understand our lost!

At one time we had so many pets that when our son needed to go to the doctor I told him I was taking him to the vet!
We lost our rat terrier, Jack, in May. He was 14. His partner, a chilhauhua/Cocker Spaniel mix, also 14, is doing ok but needed something so we decided to get another furry body in the house and now have a 7 mo. old male cat, Mr. Buddy, who is terrorizing a lizard as I type that he has so thoughtfully brought into the house and into the family room so I can enjoying watching him play with it.
I think it's dead. Blecccch.

A yellow lab (british lab so smaller than the american labs) and we are "looking" at getting a cat right now for DD. Haven't picked one out yet. Oh and some fish and a gigantic snail in DD's room (the number of fish um change)

If you have lots of money to burn then get yourself (or DD) a Ragdoll cat. They are awesome cats to have. We have one and he's neverending entertainment for us.

What's a ragdoll cat?
This is the best way to read about them. (http://www.fanciers.com/breed-faqs/ragdoll-faq.html) Now, I can tell you some of that info is not necessarily right in MY opinion. For example, it says they do not shed. HA! I LAUGH at that. We have lint rollers in our van and car so when we are going to go out to dinner or a nice event we can remove Baby from our clothes. LOL To their credit though, these cats are worth the extra sticky rollers we had to buy. I've had cats since I was very young and this one is THE best cat I've ever owned. I'm going to be a bigger mess the day we lose him than when I lost my Himalyan show cat I think. Baby is like a 2 yr old child that must be near your side at all times ~ except when he's off getting into trouble playing somewhere he's not supposed to be. LOL
They are one of the top 2 largest cats you can have as a pet and very solid. The part in that description from that page I linked you to about them being docile is very true. These cats must be indoor cats. NEVER can you let them outside because they are overly trusting of everthing. This cat of mine would sit right in the middle of the street and honestly watch a car drive right toward him and run him over with him not batting an eye, I swear. You have no idea how many times we've walked down our hallway and accidentally stepped on him when we first got him because we figured, hey, he's a cat and will have sense enough to move. UMMM NOPE! NOT HIM! He lays right there looking at us thinking they will not step on me again. HA The part about them getting the name because their entire body goes limp is true as well. When he's laying on the floor if you want him to move and take your foot to nicely push him out of your way it may as well be a wet noodle. Think of a wet spaghetti noodle laying on your counter and what it does when you take your finger and push in the center ~ the center moves as you continue pushing along with your finger but the rest just kind of follows along only because it's connected to the center. That's what his body does too so we've pretty much given up on moving him and just walk over him instead. It's much quicker. LOL
These cats have the best personality though and he gives us hours of entertainment because of it. This breed is a very good breed for kids which is why I said you should look into them. BUT, one huge caution ~ there are a lot of people who say they are selling Ragdolls but they are not a true Ragdoll. You really want to research who you buy one from to make sure you are getting one that's been bred properly. They have pedigrees just like dogs or any of the other cat breeds you see in cat shows so make sure you are buying from a reputable cattery.
We researched and visited three different ones before settling on the one we bought him from. I was VERY glad we visited those we did because even though they were a registered cattery one in particular was horrendous in their cleanliness and I left there with a migraine and sick to my stomach after only being there for an hour because the smell was SO bad. Go to a cat show and ask the different breeders there, even those not selling Ragdolls what they've heard of this one or that one and they will give an honest opinion. The one we bought from was highly recommended from a very large number of different breeders. She is known throughout the US as one of the top 5 to buy from and her cats have been top show cats a number of years getting Grand Champion and magazine covers. We had to drive all the way to Michigan to get him but we bought a pet quality Ragdoll rather than a show quality one because pet quality is cheaper yet still a registered cat.
Ok ~ I'll shut up now. :D Trust me, I could say much more.
Oh ~ one more thing ~ their fur feels more like rabbit fur than a cat. It's SO cool AND for a cat with med - long hair you do NOT have to comb them which is a huge plus if you want something more than a shorthaired cat. I rarely have to comb him.

Vicki,
I love the links to see Baby. Now I see why you thught something was up the night you had some storms come in. I really believe animals sense things before we do. I know when Hurricane Wilma came thru, I had 2 permanent shadows for a few days before. Who needs all that high-tech weather instruments? LOL. (opps, we do.)

Thanks. I do think there's something to the animals knowing something also. NOW, I need to learn to recognize that in my cat when he does those things like that instead of thinking he'd finally cracked up. HA

Baby is VERY cute but we're looking for short hair and small this time. My last cat who I ADORED was long hair and over 20 lbs (and he wasn't overweight). I had a friend that bought a Maine Coon cat at a cattery and he looks exactly and has the same mannerisms of my dear, Musashi (the cat). I'm convinced Musashi was a Maine Coon (but orange and white not your typical gray). We'll probably get a cat that's 8 months old this time just to make sure we're getting a small cat. I just wanted a totally different cat this time so I don't think of Musashi every time I look at it. Does that make sense? In my head it does :)
I love your Baby's coloring

Yep, I totally understand the reason for wanting another type this time. I actually was the same way when I chose Baby. I originally wanted a Seal point Ragdoll but because my Himalyan show cat we lost the year before was also a Sealpoint I decided to get the Blue mitted that Baby is instead. I had wanted to get a Ragdoll for a very long time but paying $600+ for a cat was not something I could do until I had some money fall into our laps and Curt told me to get one now while we could afford to do it. I swear I cried all the way home from MI when we picked him up. We got him after our weekend away celebrating our 1st wedding anniversary so it's easy to remember when his birthday is too. :D
Good luck. You'll find something.

I was looking at the Petfinder website and saw there was a Ragdoll cat on there. Too funny since I didn't even know what a Ragdoll was until a few days ago. He is not nearly as cute as baby though.

Too funny about finding one like that after we just "talked" about them. That is where I said to be sure it's a "real" Ragdoll. Many will say that it is because they can charge more for it. :D
Baby is currently sitting on my bathroom sink (since I just left there and he hasn't followed yet) trying to steal my dixie cups again. LOL He steals them out of the holder and wanders off. WHY? I have no idea but, we have a new holder and they are next to impossible for ME to get out so I know he's going to give up soon. I'm such a mean Momma. hehe

Well, we'll have fish soon! ;)
There was an auction tonight to benefit a local family with a 7-year old boy with pretty severe autism. I attended high school with the mom and we were in music/drama together.
I got a 16 gallon fish tank with a cool front that arcs outward slightly- funky! Corinne will PEE when she wakes up and sees it. ;)

I have a 15 yr. old female Chihuahua/Cocker Spaniel mix named Floppy and a 9 mo. old male gray tabby named Buddy (or MR. Buddy when he's in trouble). Our Rat Terrier, Jack, passed away last May '07, he was 14. He was Floppy's faithful companion all those 14 years and Floppy became a different dog after that, she's still a sweet dog, but different. I didn't want to get another dog but felt she needed another furry body around to at least relate to so after it seemed like she was done grieving I started looking for a cat. We went to the vet for a check up and they had kittens, I picked Floppy up and took her over to the cage and said "look at the kitties" and Buddy reach out and grabbed her and held onto her and she didn't shy away. I figured that was a sign. They aren't close companions but they do keep tabs on each other and Floppy has livened up considerably so it was a good choice.
