I have a close friend that I sew with from time to time. She bought a new house last year, and we have made tons of pillows for her house. We also get together to make small gifts like kitchen towels, aprons, and pillowcases.
It is so much fun. Sometimes we sew for 3 days straight. One of our next projects is my bedroom. We're going to do the drapes and some decorator pillows for my bed.

My aunt and I get together and sew all the time. We also go shopping for fabric, thread, etc. together. It is soooo much fun having someone close that loves sewing as much as I do.

Fabric and trim shopping is the prerequisite for our sewing marathons, and of course, eating out.:)

Ok- don't laugh, but, I have a friend at work that quilts. When either of us are having a really terrible day, we seek each other out to go to the the local Joann's store just to feel and "smell" the fabric. We have to de-stress some how.

I have no friends that embroider- and no "groups". The closest group is over an hour away, and usually during the day, when I work.

Anyone out there from Northeast OHIO?

There are seven of us who met at SF and realized we all lived in the Houston area. We've been getting together at least once a month at a local quilt shop that let's us use their classroom. We get a great place to spread out our sewing and the shop makes money because we all love to shop! There are also impromptu shopping and lunch days with 2 or more of us joining in. At the end of the month we are having our first Sew Retreat. 3 days in the piney woods in a cabin on the lake and all we have to do is sew!

Oh, I wish I did! My grandmother lives in New Hampshire. She sews alot and has an embroidery machine. When I bought mine, she was the first person I called! You would have thought I announced I was having a baby! She came down to visit a couple of weeks ago and we checked out all the sewing stores and fabric stores together. It is nice to have someone that understands you!

Fortunately for me, my best friend, who doesn't sew, has a wonderful mother in law and aunt who have included me their circle. The three of us will bring our machines over and sew sometimes for two days. It is great! We usually have 2 embroidery machines and atleast one sewing machine going.

I have a friend from NC that I met on the Fibro Embroiders group. We emailed for over a year and then she came to ARk to see me in June and again in Nov. We have such a ball together since we share the same passion..She sews on one machine while I sew on the other...Shopping for fabric, now I thought I was bad but she needs blinders in fabric stores....She says it jumps into her basket but I don't think I am falling for that one...I just wish she lived closer to me...

I have a quilting buddy who lives 2 hours away. We go on retreats together and have little mini sewins at her house. I wish we lived closer to each other so that we could sew together more often......She is just getting into embroidery and I hope she sticks with it. She has the machine but the thought of the thread purchases is a little daunting to her.

I am jealous besause you have a sewing buddy. Wish I did. Hopefully your freind does stick with it. I know when I first started I was also intimidated by the cost of thread. I got a lot of thread off of ebay and also when Joann's had theire 50% or 60% off thread sales. Over just a couple of years I have quite a nice collection of thread and have only paid "full price" on a small amount of it.

We had a group of us that would get together and sew on Tuesday nights. We would try a new pattern each time (we all had girls!) We even did a hairbow night. I took the class, then about 8 of us got together, drank wine and make hairbows. It was a lot of fun....we would rotate houses and whoevers house it was at would provide dinner then we would get sewing!
We all worked, so when more babies started coming along we had to stop...maybe now that they are getting a little bigger we could pick it back up!

My mom is my sewing buddy. I never had an interest in sewing growing up, so I just learned three years ago and now I am hooked on paper pieced quilts. It works for me because I stink at keeping the fabric aligned, but with paper piecing all I need to do is sew on the lines. HA HA.

I'm a member of the American Sewing Guild and our neighborhood group loves to get together and sew. We do at least 2 charity sewing projects each year. Our current project is making Christmas stockings for Metrocrest Services. We make the stockings in September and then when we get together in November we fill them with all sorts of toys, candy and books. Any extra stockings we make are filled by the church that we meet in, and then they donate them to another organization.

We really have a lot of fun together. We all have the same fabric and sewing addiction, and most everyone has at least one embroidery machine. It's so nice to be with a group of people who understand your need for "more" embroidery designs, thread, etc.

I do not have a "come over and sew with me buddy", but I do have a great friend that lives several hours away, and we stay in touch over the internet and share ideas and projects. Sometimes we plan out a project together and then both make them and compare photos. She is a lot of inspiration and great help when I have problems of questions.

Hi - I have built-in sewing buddies wherer I work, which is a sewing machine store. It's great to share ideas and products with our customers who are also our friends as well as with each other. Problem is I have sew little sewing time. I would like a "day off' buddy that I can shop and sew with!

The wonderful thing about these boards is you don't have to live close together to be sewing buddies. I have a couple of friends, one in Florida and one in Nevada, who I only know online. But we have learned Embird together through Skype. http://skype.com/ It works just like a telephone only you use the speakers on your computer or headphones. We can conference our calls so all 3 of us are on the same page...literally! We'll have Embird open and a project on the screen and take turns teaching each other what we've learned elsewhere or on our own. It's great and it's free!!! No phone bills either! Give it a try for those Cyber friends.

You have to love those who love it as much as you do..I have 3 friends all within an hour of me. Back during the summer when we had more time to actually do something we would find a night that one of our husbands were out of town for buisness, etc. and have a sleepover. Sewing all night long and into the morning. It was great! No kiddos, no DH's, girlfriends who do what you love to do!..what more can i say?!

I don't have anyone near me but my girlfriend wants a machine like mine badly so she can do stuff like I do. Her husband doesn't see why she needs something so expensive unless she's going to use it to make money. Yea, he's the original scrooge. I've called him that for over 25 yrs now. She said, for her first example that she can't expect Vicki to keep making them stuff for free forever and she's right because I stopped because everything was being done free and I had to pay for the stuff I was using. She's got two grandchildren now that she could be making all kinds of cool stuff for and it upsets her. So, long story short, if she ever gets a machine then I will have someone. I don't mind though not having someone since I know we'd end up talking and shopping at fabric stores more than any actual sewing.

We bought our house 5 years ago (notice I had a built in craft room, wanted to know this craft person who had the house before me). Well I got to meet Betty and we do everything togeher: embroider, sew, quilt, stained glass, wood working, upholstery, knitting, crocheting, cornice boards, organizing, and lots of shopping did I say shopping..okay again shopping. :call2: We even go on the internet together over the phone to discuss things and ideas as we look. I am very blessed to have such a good everything friend. Oh, Betty is on board now, I want to share this wonderful soul with my addict friends.

My mom (nanamcd) is my sewing buddy.

I have fond memories of her sewing clothes and such for us as kids (though we never did get that purple Barbie dress, did we? ;) ).

She made formals for us in high school and college.

She made all three bridesmaids' dresses for my wedding, my wedding dress, and her own dress for my wedding.

Then she repeated that feat (except she bought her own dress) for my sister's wedding about 1 1/2 years later.

Then she bought her embroidery machine in 2001 and we've never looked back. I'd sewn on her machine until this summer when I was doing enough business to warrant getting my own machine. We talk (and shop!) embroidery and sewing frequently... nearly daily, I'd guess.

So no offense to anyone else's sewing buddies, but I think I have the best.

And as for the purple Barbie dress. The intended recipient (25 years ago?) is expecting her first daughter in February. Guess what's on my URGENT! list?! I have the purple fabric and am ready to roll.

We lived in East Tenn. when our 2 girls were born. I met my sewing buddy in Lamaze class when we were each pregnant with our 1st daughters. She is a middle school Home Ec. teacher. When I learned to smock when our daughters were about 10 months old, I taught her to smock. We both had daughters again, 2 years after the 1st ones! We'd swap patterns and ideas. My husband was transferred to Chicago when our youngest was 7months old, but Vicki and I stayed close. We'd mail patterns back and forth, and send pics of what we'd made. In 1994, she entered us in a hometown photo shoot contest at Creative Needle magazine, and we got it! We each made several garments, and our daughters modeled in late fall for the July/Aug '95 issue.

We still keep in touch, but not as much.

The other person who could qualify as a sewing buddy is my daughter. She is an assistant designer at a dancewear company. When she was going to college, she started in Costume Construction Technology, and when they were beginning to sew, she'd call to tell me what techniques they'd learned. She has learned far more than I about tailoring and the technical aspects of sewing. She and I have wildly different tastes, but she is very creative. She had to do a complete fashion show, and she did a children's line. I believe she made about 35 pieces. I helped very little.

A bit of a sidenote, the daughter of my TN sewing buddy is an art student. I have kept up with only 1 other mom from our Lamaze class, and her daughter is a hair stylist in LA and has done hair on American Idol for the last 3 or 4 seasons. I think it's interesting that all 3 girls have gone on to do very creative things!

I am fortunate to have a few sewing buddies. We try to get together Wednesday mornings as soon as our school age children are on the bus. That leaves us with a few preschoolers on hand, but we still manage to do some sewing...or at least talk sewing.

I have always pretty much been a "lone" sewer, but signed up for a monthly quilting class last year with my mom. We get together, have lunch, and finish that month's "assignment" the day of our class. It has been a great time to share with my mom. I highly recommend it for anyone. This year, another frient has enrolled in the same class. Should be a blast.

I don't have a sewing buddy, but what a great idea. I have a few girlfriends who did mention that we should do a sewing girls night out once a month and everybody bring a dish and just have fun. Maybe I will try to find away to arrange all of this. Thanks for the idea.

I don't have a sewing buddy, but it does sound like fun. When I was learning to quilt I went with 4 other ladies. It was an all day quilting fest, we all brought a dish for lunch and sewed, talked, and ate our way through the day. I really enjoyed the fellowship. There is nothing as nice as being with a group of fellow sewers. I hated it when the classes came to an end.

I have one of the best sewing buddies possible. We have been friends for over twenty years, but have just started sewing together over the last year. She has always been there for me whenever I needed her. Now we get together a couple of times a month and sew all day on a Saturday. It is wonderful. It keeps us both motivated to finish all of our projects so that we can go to the store together and get materials and supplies for our next project. I wish we would have started doing this years ago.

What happened? I used to have a best friend and we did a little sewing together but mainly craft type things. I too got really hurt by my "so-called" friend also. It has almost been like dealing with a death so I definitely understand your sorrow. Someone told me recently a little saying - I will have to get it for you. It went something like - There is a reason that your past friends did not become your future. Don't wonder why just be grateful. You'll have to PM me and we can compare stories.

Dana,
I am from the South Western part of Ohio, so that doesn't help at all! I had a wonderful life time friend who passed away a few years ago from cancer. We loved to sew together so much that she created a sewing room over her garage for us. Lots of tables and lights ect. Now I have no one to share this enjoyment with. I do enjoy reading this message board, being able to talk to someone about this hobby.

That sounds like fun!! My embrodering friends live out of town, but we share ideas and info a lot. They have given me lots of good tips. I live in a small town, and don't know anyone in town that has a machine...I may be the only one!! The shopping trips would really be a blast.

That's horrible for you. If there were a good reason you could possibly understand it, but when there's no reason she can give you, or you can think of then it just sits in your mind and burns at you with all the questions of WHY! :(

I have a friend like that, she'd love to be a sewing buddy, but she can't afford a machine and I can't afford to have her come here all the time to use my supplies and make things either. I used to make things for her grandkids when they were born because I wanted to BUT, then that turned into an expectation that I would do that all the time and take requests for things. Ummmmm NO! I'm more than willing to do things when I want to but when it turned into "free orders" that's when I had to draw the line. We even tried to rationalize this with her husband to allow him to say yes, she can get a machine but nope, he just won't budge on that because it is so expensive and he can't understand why she has to have a machine that costs so much. Of course, he has NO problem buying tools and stuff for his motorcycle that cost A LOT of money and she even pointed that out and still it's nope. Anyway, to bring it back to the sewing buddy abandoning you for no reason, this friend also pulled away once I stopped doing free things for her and rarely calls now. She's done this for years though. When she wants to do things with me she knows I'm like a faithful puppy who will always be there for her until she's tired of that and goes on to doing other things elsewhere. It really hurts but I can't figure out why that happens either.

Truthfully though, I think I'm happy in my sewing room by myself doing what I want to do alone because I get a lot more done. I talk way too much, as evidenced by my super long posts :p so when anyone is nearby I'll talk more than I will sew things. Luckily I have a husband who is very interested in things I can make and some day he'll learn them too because he's interested in learning to digitize and when he does he can be my sewing buddy. :D
