Have any of you worked as embroidery testers (the pay is terrible but the benefits are great). You don't get paid, just keep the completed design. I worked as a FSL tester for two years

I initially found them through Yahoo groups and it spread from there. I ended up testing for 5 different designers and it was fun
That does sound like fun!!!

You usually have 72 hours to turn it around unless it's a rush and are required to do 3-4 a month

I would like to test designs. How do you get started?

I posted an ad on several large Yahoo groups, that I was available to test. It requires a little patience. You need to scan the design and send it back or whatever the requirements are for the individal designers. I had a group of them until last year when I had to disband it due to health reasons

I've been a tester for about four digitizers in the past and a one still now when she really needs me to help out. It really depends on the digitizer as to what their requirements are. Some are totally laid back and don't have strict requirements while others require certain fabric and have exact times they want to have their designs done and back to them by. Those I've done this for in the past aren't like that because then it's not as much fun. Volunteer work should be fun ya know. The one I love testing for the most my husband and I have already met in person and had a blast. She's really laid back and knows if she emails or calls me I'm usually available for something if another tester backed out on her.
For anyone you test for it really depends on what they want. Sometimes they may have a sale planned and want the pics back asap while other times they may just have a new set they are releasing in the next month and don't need the test pics back for a few days or more. Some require a scan in an exact size while others only want a digital picture and don't care about the size. The requirements vary from digitzer to digitizer as much as their designs vary. I see a number of posts from digitizers in the yahoo groups looking for testers so if you are in those groups also, keep your eyes open and you'll see when someone needs a tester. Email back asap because they generally get replies very quickly.
You never know, some day maybe Jami will need someone also but she'll have to let us know. Some digitizers prefer to test their own designs also and never use testers.

Vicki Thanks for the info. Which yahoo groups do you belong to? I only belong to one right now.
I think to list them all here it would take about three posts since there is a posting limit if I recall to each post. :D Last I checked, I belonged to over 200 groups. HA! I NEED to cut way, WAY back because I am not finding any time to sew. I spend my entire day on my computer reading.

It can be fun but, you have to remember that the digitizer is also expecting a great stitchout with you using proper stabilizer and techniques and some even require it to be done as a project of your own idea even. Some only require a stitchout on a piece of fabric. When agreeing/offering to do testing, you have to look at that as a job because in essence, that's what it is. You are doing something for the digitzer they don't have time to do themselves and they are giving you the design free for doing that job rather than an employer who would pay you. These are designs they are going to sell so they want good feedback because if you have any problems they want to know from you, the testers. They'd much rather hear of problems from their testers than from 1000 that may buy their design and then complain and want their money back.

It sounds like it could be fun, but also sounds like it would be a bit of a pain, :).
Right now, I don't have the time to do it, but it might be something I look to do in the future!

It is fun. You just have to read their rules about testing first and find one that's more laid back the first time.

This sounds like a great way to build up your libary and have more designs to work from in the future.

Yes, it is. I just remembered another difference in digitigers. Some will give you the design you are testing for them only (including the final one if there were any adjustments needed while you tested it) and others will give you the entire set it goes with for testing.
