OK, I had posted on another thread how I had found these totes at Target for $2.49 and thought I could make them into nice teacher's gifts. I had planned on Embroidering an initial on the tote. Then I couldn't get my big hoop set right on the bag without sewing the bag shut:mad: I thought about taking the bag apart put it is sewn together quite nicely and I'd just ruin it trying that so I thought I'd try "free standing embroidery" for the initial. Well the font was too skinny for that:( So I decided to do the applique and bought the font applique for $3 after a quick search. I guess you get what you pay for.... the satin stitching at the end was too short. It either didn't cover the fabric (and I cut it short!) or it didn't sew enough into the fabric to hold it down. I decided it was good enough though. I'm too tired to do more. I did do a really nice scrapbook for the main teacher so I spent way more money and time than I should. I bought the bags because even though I did the scrapbook... the other teachers didn't get anything.
You can see where I burned the initial on the K. Couldn't anything go right?

They look really cute! I know what you mean when it comes to getting what you pay for. I bought some applique fonts and the satin stitching needs to be thicker and wider, because mine missed some of the fabric, too. It might have even been from the same person!:)

Another idea for teacher totes...I buy the canvas totes at Wal-Mart...3 to a package for under $6. I used a book design from another web-site and also put the teacher's name at the top. I'm sure one could find a suitable design here on embroiables. I'm making lunch totes this yr. In another post I gave info on some that I found for a good price. I'm thinking of using a flower or bee or butterfly design from embroiables and then the teacher's name. I love that applique font but hate that the quality wasn't good :( that is so disappointing! they are still very cute and I'm sure the teacher's will love them!

I've got bags already--left over from another project. I was thinking of using them for Christmas, but how do you do it without taking them apart?

I love the totes, the colors and fabric are really sharp looking. Sorry you had trouble with them. I have sure had my troubles with some of my projects! I offered this past summer to embroidery about 20 denim back packs for girl scouts going to camp, just out of the good of my heart you could say, and what a pain they turned out to be. I had to take everyone apart on one side so I could get their names down towards the middle of them. What I thought would just be fun turned out to be a chore. They did like them tho. Good job anyway!

I think they turned out great, and I don't see anything wrong with the K, but I know how it feels to have a project not go as planned.

They did turn out great! I did something close to a reusable shopping bag for my kids' teachers. Tried to save a polar bear since my kids can't turn a dang light switch off!
