I saw some pettiskirts at a local upscale children's store and noticed they sell for $80. The matching tank top was another $80. I thought maybe I can make one so I found some free instructions on Ehow. I did change them a little bit and the skirt itself is "easy peasy". I don't have a ruffler foot for my sewing machine so I gathered by hand and doing that last ruffle was a pain! All in all I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. If I do another one I think I'll do the last ruffle in a contrasting color to give it more pop. Now....where is Mia supposed to where this? OK, didn't add the bow to the pettiskirt because I discovered I suck at making big bows. I thought since I can make hairbows just tying a bow for a skirt will be easy. Not! I did however make a pettiskirt for her doll with the left over scraps. It's kind of short and I was NOT going to attempt that last ruffle in mini size. Mia was thrilled with her little look alike. When I posed the question "where will Mia where this?" Apparently the answer was: to walk to Walgreens pushing her doll in a stroller wearing the same skirt. She even picked out the bowflops I made to finish off her outfit. Aren't we fancy.

Mia is just beautiful and so is the skirt! I can't wait to make the little look alike outfits for dollies, too. I guess I have some time before she gets into the American Girl dolls. The catalog came in the other day and she and I were ooohhhing and awwing over everything. You did a great job on the skirt.:D

How adorable!

But, it makes me sad that my little girls are all grown up and I can't make cute things like that for them anymore. :(

You did a great job but yes, I agree, buy the ruffler! You would not believe how easy it is to make ruffles with one.

Someone else just asked in another thread about rufflers and I answered here there with a link to the one I bought. I haven't used it since class but I will at some point because it was really fun to use.

You did a beautiful job, I know that skirt was made with love. Your little girl and her doll are so cute. I am sure she was a hit at Walgreens. I loved the pictures.

The pattern called for nylon chiffon which apparently doesn't unravel so there's no hemming in the directions but I used poly chiffon. It was at Hobby Lobby and I used my 40% off coupon (reg $4.99). I bought 4 yds and I still have 1.5 yds left (even after the doll). I also made it a little long (Mia is 5). I did serge the ends so if you want to try with the poly chiffon (cheaply) I'd serge or overcast stitch. My mom just gave me a serger a few months ago and I don't even know how to backstitch with it...just go in a straight line. I just tie the threads off in a knot:( It still looks better than not doing it though.
Martha Stewart also has a pattern that I printed out but her's is double-layered (as is the boutique pettis). Her version also didn't share how to adjust for sizes that's the main reason I went with eHow's. Just go to eHow and type in pettiskirt. I think the directions were made by "Craftymum".

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I have been mulling over making one for some time. Next time I vesit my Mom I think I'll make a trip to Hobby Lobby. The pattern called for nylon chiffon which apparently doesn't unravel so there's no hemming in the directions but I used poly chiffon. Wouldn't you know, I came across this cute dress last night from this book (http://www.karimeaway.com/products/482). Just thought I'd share another way that the pettiskirt could be done. Although, I have a feeling the skirt done by ccdosteris much easier, plus it's definitely more versatile.

See though, that's actually a problem. I don't have the time I need to make all these cute things. That's why boys suit me good, I don't require all the frills for them like I do for a little girl.

Mia is beautiful, and I can tell she loves her new petiskirt. If I'd had one like that when I was a kid, I'd have been the queen of the block.

Jami - I have that same book. So many cute things.

I know. I love that dress, too. I don't actually own the book and haven't even flipped through it. I just noticed it online. I hope to add it to my collection someday, though.

I'm with you on that one. I had three boys and am finally getting a little girl. You never know what's in store down the road. ;)

Our local sewing store has the book and I flip through it every time I go in! Gorgeous stuff. If only I had more time...

"OK, didn't add the bow to the pettiskirt because I discovered I suck at making big bows. "

My mother used to sew a tiny little bell into our pettiskirts. I don't really know why, but it was always so fun to have that tiny little jingle when you walked and twirled. She kept it really small, so it would not be annoying. It is something I will never forget.

Is anyone here old enough to remember tulle petticoats? It would be fun to have something like that underneath, though I do remember that they were very scratchy!

Jami ~ That is really pretty. I think I like that much more than all the tutu-type tulle everyone seems to be putting on thier little girls now. That just looks so much more finished or something.
