I am a newbie....how do I combine letters?

I am new to embroidering. I recently purchased a Husqvarna/Viking Scandinavia 400. I have registered for classes but couldn't wait to get started. I have already embroidered some hand towels and now I am hooked!

So my questions is...i purchased letters in both upper and lowercase but how do I combine them to form words? I know Husqvarna has a 4D embroidery software that has a tool but it looks to be expensive. Are there other programs out there? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a Viking and purchased the Embird software....it's easy to use, reasonably priced and combining letters is very simple with this program. You can purchase their fonts or use other fonts from the internet.
