Thank you so much Jami for offering these contests to us each month. You are awesome for doing that. Hopefully this month you'll see an increase in entries now that we have new members amongst us.
All those new members and the others too, don't forget the contest can be entered even if all you use are the wonderful free sample designs that Jami has given us. Get that machine out and search out all those free designs and show us what you made from them.

When will the next contest start 8/1? Do you enter anytime during the month or do you have to wait till the end of the month? I may try to get something done and enter.

Never mind the above question!!! Such a dummy here that if I had looked at the Inspiration contest thread first I would have the answers. Just like me to start at the end first (LOL)

LOL Don't feel bad for asking. I will warn you that there have been some months where the contest was closed within a week or two of the start. You don't want to wait too long since the contest is limited to the first 10 entries. After that the contest for that month is closed and you will have to wait until the following month.

Seems to me I had better get busy then - Can you include a monogram or child's name on the item? I would like to enter if I can get my sewing room in a little order. I thought I would organize, however when I pulled everything out don't want to put it back (LOL) Didn't realize it would be so much work and school starts on Monday, so have got to get buttons sewn on and hems done, etc. over the weekend. I guess I'd better stay off this computer and get busy huh?

Yes you can include monograms and other wording on the projects as long as it's a generic type font.

I just want to congratulate all of you that entered the contest, your entries were beautiful it was hard to make up my mind who to vote for. I always get so inspired by your creations. Don't you think that being a member of this website has just doubled your fun and enjoyment in embroidery and sewing. It is a treat for me to be able to talk with others with similar interest and problems.

Thanks "someone"!!
My niece Arielle, for whom I made the outfit, absolutely DOES NOT want to go to kindergarten! It's hilarious to hear her talk about it. She says she learned all she needed to know in preschool -- she and her Granny cook, she has chores around the house/garden, she knows how to write her name, and she knows how to be nice (sometimes). If you ask her about school while on the phone, the conversation is over, right then! She says "Bye Bye Love You" and the call ends. Her mom calls it the "K Word." It's going to be a long long haul to get her through school even if promised the giant box of crayons with the sharpener and a Hannah Montana backpack. I sent the outfit to her as a gift for late-summer and early-fall and certainly did not mention it was for school or she may have not worn it. She loves the shiny shoes and the ruffles -- she is such a girly girl.

Oh my gosh that just sounds hillarious! http://www.terpstra.us/images/vickiljt/Gifs/lol2.gif Well, right NOW it is, but I'm guessing that first day of "K" could be a day Momma decides to take up drinking after the fight it sounds like she may be having.
Cute outfit. How did you do those shoes? I'm assuming you did that with the fabric since it matches so well.

I'm also wondering how you did the shoes - they are great!
Carlene
08-11-2008, 07:06 AM
Good golly here we go with another great group of "inspirations"!
I saw the shoes at one of those expensive childrens' boutique places (you know the ones you go in and come out saying, "I could make that for $5 and I would never pay $50 for a pair of tennis shoes...")
Anyway, take the cheapest of the cheap white canvas tennis shoes. Remove the laces. Decide which area you want to cover with the fabric. I did the front toe and heel sections. They are divided by stitching where the shoe sections are sewn together. I made templates for the areas and realized I had to make slits in the fabric to accomodate the curve of the shoes. I covered the area with a heavy layer of Modge Podge I already had it (or any waterproof adhesive), cut the fabric from the templates and stuck the fabric on the shoes. It was a little challenging to make the fabric lay flat and a paintbrush really helped. That's also when I figured out to make a couple of slits and the fabric would lie flat. Then I coated it with 3-4 more layers of Modge Podge, letting them dry between coats. Arielle has a tendency to get dirty and the extra layers make the shoes easy to clean with a damp cloth. The shoes are supposed to be washable, but I don't know if Arielle's mom has washed them. I used two fabrics for the ruffles and used the flower fabric for the toe section and the striped fabric for the heel section. Added polka dot grossgrain ribbon for the laces and DONE.
Two things I learned -- this is MESSY !!!! and use fabric with small print then the required slits won't be as obvious.

Ooh cool! Thanks. I wasn't sure if you'd done something special to them other than to use Mod Podge. I've never used that other than for something like a puzzle we inlaid into a wood table or on pictures I made from old Christmas cards years ago. I didn't think that would be plyable enough for shoes like that. Interesting. I know Mod Podge expanded their line over the years. Do they make one now for fabrics or did you just use the original kind? I think those are just adorable and look great with the outfit and maybe I might consider something similar for my granddaughter.
The shoes were a little stiffer than they were originally, but they are certainly soft enough to wear. I figure she will wear the shoes only a short time anyway, so what the heck. Arielle has now suggested it might be a good idea if she had matching shoes for her other outfits. Wouldn't her mother just die if she knew Arielle said that? My niece and her husband are very strict with Arielle and have a rule if she asks for anything, she is not allowed to keep it. Arielle and I have an understanding that I appreciate her "suggestions." It's sooooooo much fun being the aunt and not the mom...
susank
08-11-2008, 04:56 PM
This technique sounds simple - I will suggest it to my daughters who are always writing on shoes. I find that looks messy and this seems to give a better result.
PLEASE READ REGARDING SHOES - I forgot I had one final step. I gave the shoes a couple of coats of acrylic sealer. You buy it next to the Modge Podge and it is less than $2 per bottle and a bottle will make 5-6 pairs of shoes. This makes the shoes water resistant.
Sorry for the brain freeze,
Nancy

All right you two. Here's the scoop...Vicki: I'm not afraid of your hubby. Curt is just a big teddy bear. :p Dawn? Well, you never say anything bad about anyone! :D
I think I'll post a picture of my tote, just because I'm proud of my first tote! My sister asked me where I bought the tote! Now that shows ya how well it was done! (I won't tell you how long it took me to make it.) But as far as craftyness and cuteness? Other project are far better! When I saw Vicki's little tote using the Breast Cancer Dolly Design and all those pockets she put in it, I knew that I had a long way to go. I'm still just an amateur! Pockets? Why didn't I think of that?!:hmmmm2:
StitchinGrandma
08-15-2008, 07:04 AM
I'll tell Curt to bring his scary Marine voice with him next time and then you won't say he's a big teddy bear. :p The cat was being very bad behind me last week when he peeked into my sewing room on his way down the hallway and he yelled at him. The cat, being his usual non-fearing self could have cared less. Me, on the other hand almost fell off my chair as I jumped because he scared me! THEN I yelled at him for scaring me that way because I had no idea he was even there and then he yelled like that. Scared the CR*P out of me. Trust me, he can be quite scary if he tries. :D
And as far as that long way to go comment? Oh PUHLEASE! That was the first purse I'd made since about high school and we all know how long ago that was. HA!

The fabric box is made out of a tablecloth purchased on clearance (after Halloween last year). It is the same fabric as the towels, but I'm not a good enough seamstress to be able to make the box out of a towel, and the tablecloth gave me extra fabric to work with. I have also seen the same fabric at Hancock fabrics.

That is a great idea! I can think of many times I have passed over holiday tablecloths at yard sales and thrift shops for really cheap. I might look at them a little differently now!

The towels were purchased as a matching set (also on clearance after Halloween). I have also found tablecloths that have a small stain, or tear in them and have snatched them up for less than a dollar at yard sales or thrift shops. I have a friend that is a really good seamstress and she makes towels out of tablecloths all the time.

The pattern is "Simplicity Christmas Club #4840" and I used plastic canvas in place of cardboard, so it can be washed (and it holds up better). I got my pattern at Hancock fabrics, but have also seen it on-line. You can put snaps, ties, or buttons at the corners. I prefer the ties, but have also used snaps and my girlfriend (the excellent seamstress) has even put buttons with button loops in the corners.

Matching fabric...let's see. That one's a little tough because once fabric is released and has run it's course they typically don't print more. A few years ago, Jone Hallmark had fabric to match the Vehicles (http://www.embroidables.com/store.php?page=Designs&Artist=Jone) collection, but I don't think it's in print anymore.
Renae Lindgren has had fabric to match her Born in the USA (http://www.embroidables.com/store.php?page=product&collection=36)set.
Keri Schneider has fabric available right now to coordinate with her Frogs (http://www.blankquilting.com/FabricDetails.aspx?collectionid=154). Some of her pieces would also go great with her Ladybugs and Butterflies. Her Owl Pals (http://www.blankquilting.com/FabricDetails.aspx?collectionid=175)will be available soon. Come to think of it, she does have Ladybug fabric (http://www.blankquilting.com/FabricDetails.aspx?collectionid=161). I'm sure this will all be available in her Etsy shop soon.
One thing to keep in mind with out of print fabric is to check Etsy and Ebay. Often time, you can find what you need there. Also, Google-ing for it, isn't a bad idea.
HTH!

HTH!
Jami - I knew I had seen the frog fabric before!! I bought some last year from a quilt shop- was going to do a small quilt for one of the girls as Christmas (ask me did I) Soooo went to my shelf and there it is!!! Loved it then and love it now. I put some on pillow cases last Christmas for a Christmas present. Thanks for the information...

I bought some of the frog fabric and ask a fabric store owner to order more.
There are cute coordinates to go with it. Also the fabric store owner said she saw the fabric for the owls and that it is really cute and that it is cuter than it shows up on the internet. I can't wait. Jo

Isn't everything always cuter in person?! Here fabric is great quality and the colors are bright and vivid...just what I think of when I think of Keri!

Thanks Jamie for the matching fabric info. Now all I have to do is get fun2sew over to my house and show me all about ebay. (She's smart in that area.) I'll check out the Etsy shop today!

Lottie Jo I love the pillows. You did such a good job matching fabrics and trims with the designs. The quotes are perfect too!
UPDATE ON THE "K" WORD -- my niece (for whom I made the outfit in the contest) started school yesterday and she already asked if she can skip tomorrow. She was to ride the bus home the one mile from kindergarten and go to her grandma's house which is next door to her house. The buses passed Granny's house and no Arielle. 45 minutes passed; no Arielle. Granny and mom panicked; the school started looking for her. Don't worry - it all worked out after lots of phone calls and calls to the bus driver. She was, after all, just following the rules.
She was on the bus alright, but here's her version of what happened after she made it back to the school following the entire bus route.
Dad - didn't you see Granny's house and our house from the bus?
Arielle - Yes, and I saw Granny in the yard. I waved to her.
Dad - Why didn't you say something to the bus driver when he kept going past the house?
Arielle - He's supposed to know where I live and the teacher said we cannot yell on the bus. He could not hear me unless I yelled.
Dad - Arielle, why didn't you say something to the person sitting next to you?
Arielle - I couldn't
Dad - Why not?
Arielle - it was a stranger, Daddy, and I can't talk to strangers.
My sister, Arielle's grandmother, said it was a good thing Arielle is so cute because it is becoming apparent academics are not going to be her strong point. :-)

This is precious!!! Reminds me of when my girls rode the bus home on my youngest one's first day. They both got on the bus but the oldest did not see the youngest get on. Apparently the younger one got on first and went to the back of the bus and fell asleep. The oldest got off like whe was supposed to but never saw her sister on the bus. She thought maybe we had picked her up or something. The child slept on the back seat the entire bus route and only woke up when the bus driver was heading to the bus garage. Thankfully, he knew us and made a special trip to bring her home after we had searched and searched for her. She had a very good nap though!!!!

luvnmy5,
What a cute babies quilt. I can't believe I missed it. I was checking old posts from when T.S. Fay went thru and saw your entry. What a great idea to have several shower gifts around, just in case.

I realize this is a stupid question, but I'm new to these boards and can't figure out how you actually submit a vote for all of the cute entries? Help! :o

WOW! she a smart one isn't she? My daughter starts "K" tomorrow and thankfully she is excited to be going.
Thank you so much for the directions you gave earlier in the thread about the shoes. The outfit you made is wonderful. I bought a pair of canvas shoes to decorate for my daughter back before Christmas and then forgot about them. Of course they are too small for her now.
