What type of adhesive spray do you use for in-the-hoop projects?

The only spray I have used is 505. I would like to know more about other sprays and when to use them.

This is what I use, too. It doesn't gum up my machine and it's repositionable. Love the stuff! :D

Honeybee loves to post. She comes up with some great stuff too.
I use Sulky. It's great but very expensive for such a little can.. It is very light though and it doesn't build up and leave residue...

Some things are better not hooped. That's when you hoop your stabilizer--either sticky stabilizer or spray other stabilizer with 505 and stick the item to it. I usually add a basting stitch to the design when I do this. For example, I don't hoop onesies. You can even pin the item to the stabilizer--of course being careful not to have pins in the design area.

oh ok...I do this when I am feeling brave but didn't know what it was called...glad to know I'm not too crazy! How about socks...do you just pin them or do you have a special hoop?

I have a handly little tool that I use for socks, but I still use sticky stabilizer. I put the sticky in the hoop, the sock on top of that, then push the other side of the sock out of the way using the sock tool. I think it is call the sock hoopster, but not 100% positive. One of the Yahoo groups I subscribe to is a group buy one and I got it through there. Pretty handy, but you can accomplish the same thing with a couple of stratigically placed safety or straight pins

I would like to embroider a tie. Has anyone ever done this? I looked here because I thought that maybe this would be when I use sticky stabilizer? I don't have the 505 stuff...yet...I need to add it to my LOOOOOOng wish list.

Personnaly, I would used either a sticky stabilzer or use pins. Either one would allow for easier palacment and centering. Then again, I use both of those methods all the time because I really stink at hooping things straight

I try to use sticky stabilizer or Wash Away Extra, which is a sticky water soluble stabilizer that looks and acts like cloth, until it is wet. I have a can of kk2000, but I hate using the sprays, so that is always my last choice. So many of you are brave to be using pins! I baste around the design by setting it up in Embird with the baste function. I guess we are all comfortable with different things.

I bought some sticky spray, but my husband was worried about flamability. So I returned it, is the 505 highly flammable? Thanks, A.J.

I think just about anything you spray out of a can is going to have some flammability issues when using it because of the propellant used to enable it to spray. I don't think the 505 spray is any more flammable than anything else in your house you use that is a spray. Once the spray dries that shouldn't be a worry. If you smoke and are spraying while smoking then yes, it's not overly safe although, you are at no more a danger again with the 505 spray than with any other sprays used in your house.
I haven't looked, but I am willing to bet that air freshener sprayed from a can has a flammability warning on it as well and again, it would be because of the propellent needed to make it spray. It's the fumes that can be flammable more than the product itself so after it is sprayed and that is on fabric, you're fine.

Thanks, now I need to go buy and try some. I'll try the 505. Especially since I do have all of those sprays too. Thanks for the information. :)

How do you not hoop? I was wondering about doing sweat shirts on my machine and didnt think I could because of the hoop not going on correctly.

When you have something that stretches you mount a sticky stabilizer in the hoop (instead of your garment), then press the garment onto the sticky stabilizer in the area you want to embroider. The garment will adhere really well, the trick is getting all the rest of the garment out of the way so you don't accidentally embroider on a sleeve or something.
I use Solvy Sticky+, available at Joanns. I watch for the 50% off sale of notions too and stock up when I get low. I also use OESD Self Adhesive Tear Away Stablilizer. You wet it to make it sticky, and you wet it to get it to tear off the garment. Has a little stronger hold to it and comes in a longer roll for big projects.
For spray adhesive I use June Tailor's Quilt Basting Spray and Sulky KK2000 Temporary Spray Adhesive. Neither will gum up the needles.

This is basically the same thing that I do. The only difference is that my machine has a basting stitch that I do before I start the design to help hold the sweatshirt/t-shirt better. (no slipping, etc.)

I have been using the Dritz Spray Adhesive and it works great. When Joann's has the notions wall 50% off I stock up on it. It's regular price is $14.99 a can.
Judie
And, by the way, if you spray the adhesive on a square of fabric on your lap, it WILL (and I repeat will) stick to your leg. Just in case you needed to know. :-)

How do you embroider on a onsie without hooping?
Leslie explained how to do this up a little from your post. Read post #33.
Basically you hoop sticky stabilizer (sticky side up but don't remove the paper covering yet). Once that is hooped, take a pin and make an X in the center (just an X about 2 inches long in each direction) then peel the paper back enough to be able to put the onesie down onto the sticky area. Once the onesie is in place, make really sure all areas of the onesie you aren't going to embroider are pulled back and out of the way. You can use a safety pin or straight pin, or even painters tape to keep it out of the way. Just be very sure if using pins that you keep them out of the way of the needle so you don't break any needles. Once you have it all pulled back, run your design and when done, carefully so you don't stretch the onesie (or any other stretchy fabric you may do the same way) pull the stabilizer off the onesie.
