How do you organize your embroidery files?

I have folders set up for different categories. I have Deduper that helps with eliminating duplicate designs and unzipping files.

Honeybee,
You must not have anything else to do tonight except dream up questions for me to answer.:D
I use Embird. Couldn't live without it.

Categorized folders. It's just easier than one big random folder. Can you imagine trying to find something in a sea of 6,000 designs?

there is a site, where they have posted an executable file of all the file folders you could ever want. She did a good job. I have to add a few, but not many

Thanks Honeybee, I'll have to check that out.
I have started putting the name of the site where I get my designs from in the file name. Sure makes it easier to figure out where they came from.

I didn't do it in the beginning and people would ask me where the designs came from and I have to say I don't know. This way I can let them know.
This is something I really need to do.. I have the worst time trying to find a design when I need it...

Extract is where you want it and it will set up a large number of files. You can add additional files if you want, then just move your files to the category that is easiest for you

I let my daughter, (resident computer geek), handle the file names and organization...I'm able to find things that way!

I save a jpg picture of design with same name (I get the picture from the website where I bought the design) Then I organize my files by name (right click in the file folder and choose arange icons by name) The design file will show up next to the jpg file with the same name. I couldn't afford to by software to organize my files, so this is my free method. I also save the color change sheet with the same name (by copy & paste into word.)

This sounds like a good way to keep yourself organized and save some money too!

I saw this question, and knew right away this is where I can ask my question! I bought Custom Designs by Design Gallary. Does anyone have this same software? I have an issue with organizing files AND OPENING them! Some I can open and others I can't. I figured out why on a few of them...they are in BLF format and I need them in PES. I looked EVERY WHERE and can't figure out how to change it over to PES. Very frustrated, Crafty Connie

Verry efficient. Now tell us all how to back up those files! Should we save them all to cd in case of computer crash? If so how do we do it? Last night my computer that I use for all my embroidery work crashed :( I have not made a back up cd in a while :( hope I am not in too much trouble, did not dare mess with it late last night so will take a fresh look today when I have time.
here are some useful resources for the not so computer savvy:p
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/cdmedia_writetocd.mspx?mfr=true
to copy a cd:
click my computer
right click the drive the cd has been inserted into, select explore or open folder to view files, select edit at the top, select all files, copy, minimize window, go to my docs (or any other location that works for you) click file at the top, new, folder - to create a new folder, name it something you will remember, open the folder and (edit,) paste. Then follow the previous instructions at the website listed above to copy those files!!!

I have extensive folders that are categorized and in sub folders. I download to a download file then unzip using my Deduper then move them to the correct files. Have fallen behind a bit and my download folder is awfully full.

There are some really good tips here, guess as I am just getting started collecting designs if I pick a method here and stick to it. I should be pretty organized. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'm having a heck of a time hunting down a design to try & sew out before I purchase. My main interests are Dog bones & Paws plus Quilt labels. I'm looking & looking, but haven't found a freebie to stitch out yet. Please help! I'm not a cheapskate, just want to try before I purchase.

We currently have around 20 different free designs on the website. They are listed with a price of $0.00 and are mixed in with the other designs. So that you can see what to look for... there is a free crown design on this web page: http://www.embroidables.com/store.php?page=product&collection=70
If you like dog designs, you will probably like the following 2 design sets:
