Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how do I sew an applique onto something? Do I use the zig zag stitch really close together on my sewing machine????

When I have appliqued using my machine I use a fusible material to glue my applique down then I usually sew extremely close to the edge of the design using a small straight stitch or using something like a blanket stitch. I am new to applique but find that I love doing it. I am learning to quilt and I am drawn to doing small quilts that have applique. I am looking forward to what experienced quilters tell you about applique.

I do alot of applique and use the satin stitch on my machine. Some applique patterns that you download will already have the satin stitch programmed. If you are doing it "free-hand", I use the fusible stabilizer under it and then use the satin stitch to go around the pieces.

Satin stitch. Okay. I'll look at machine and see what I can come up with! Thanks!

Also--watch out that you don't use too heavy of a fusible. I made one once with Ultra Heat and Bond, and it made the needle so sticky, that the thread kept shredding and breaking. They do make a sewable heat and bond.
