How do you store your thread? Do you use drawers, thread racks, thread boxes? Looking for ideas.

I use one open tray for the thread that I use the most that some kind of makeup came in. It is perfect to keep about 40 spools of the 1200 yd. spools. I have a cubbyhole in my desk that I slide it into.
I keep my extra thread in a couple of those containers that Wal-mart sells with the lids.

I need to change the way I store my thread. I have them in OESD thread boxes now, but it is not very handy. I am planning to get my DH to make a cabinet but I am not sure what I want.

I use the rolling carts that have six drawers, smaller drawers for thread, larger ones for supplies.

I use the plastic boxes with the pegs to put the thread roll on...I use tape to hold the thread down and keep it from unravelling (sp?) while in storage!

I was told that the thread should be stored out of sunlight and free of dust and humidity. Also, if you're not going to do a ton of embroidery to by the smaller spools. You may not get through the big spools fast enough and they might get old. Is this last part true?

Wow I have never heard that before...has anyone else...That is quite interesting! I do keep my box under my sewing table so it isn't exposed to anything (except for an occasional PB & J stained hand!) but what would happen if you had it for a long time?
I need some thread racks but right now I use plastic containers.
I've read that thread should be out of sun and covered too. I have mine in drawers. I have to do this too, because of little children and kittens that like to get into things.
I have heard a few people use the sticky glad wrap to wrap around their thread, in order to keep the thread from unwinding- but I think that would leave a residue. I use Magic tape (I think that is what it is called) It is a transparent blue colored stretchy plastic. I got the big roll and cut strips in half to wrap around my thread. It is reusable, and can be used for many projects!:)

I just started my embroidery thread collection. I chose Floriani. Any help with what to keep this thread in as it is a taller cone than most.
Thanks~

I first put a peg board in my closet to hold all my thread...I took little stickers and number them and had a list hanging that I could cross reference to find the color I needed...That got to be a pain...sew,
I purchased a rolling 6 drawer cart from office depot that works wonderfully...It also has storage on top for needles, bobbins or whatever you want to store there to be at your finger tips...RIght now dust is being stored there...LOL
Anyhoo, I can roll it over to whichever machine I am using...

Thanks BJoy. I keep saying that is what I am going to do but forget everytime I go out to take a spool with me. Maybe I will grab one now and put it by the door. :)

A couple of years ago I found a six drawer rolling chest that is the perfect size for storing my thread, even the taller Floriani and Isacord spools. It was designed to hold Christmas ornaments, but the cardboard dividers came right out. Now that Christmas stuff is out in the stores, they might be available. Mine is red with clear drawers that are all one size.
How are you organizing the thread? By color, number, brand? I started out putting like brands together- but I have a variety of brands, but not necessarily a large quantity of one.
Which brand of thread have you felt worked the best?

My hubby installed kitchen cabinets on on of the walls of my sewing room. I have my miscellaneous thread in one of those cabinets stored in the plastic containers that you can buy at JoAnns. I also have a Madeira Thread Chest that is filled to the gills with beatiful colors :)

I throw it all in a drawer. hahah!
Not very helpful, eh?
My thread is on racks on the walls. I have one rack of regular sewing thread and the other has embroidery thread. Both are out of the way of sunlight. I have them organized by color "family" blues and purple on one row lt to dk, red, pinks, and oranges on another, greens and yellows on another, so on and so forth. That way I can compare shades to each other.

I store mine in a 6 drawer storage unit I bought at JoAnn fabrics. It works great because I can stand almost all the threads upright. I do have some very large cones of thread that I bought from Marathon Thread for $2.50 each. They had a fairly decent selection of colors at a fantastic price.
BJoyed - thanks for all the wonderful info. on threads. I love how helpful and informative everyone in this group is. :)

I have some in plastic carriers that are made for thread, and a huge amount on pegs on the wall that are out of the sunlight. They are in numerical order, which is also by color family, so helpful to pick up quickly.

I used to use the plastic thread containers, but use thread racks now. They are so much nicer...easy to to see all your colors and get to them.

I started out with the old thread rack on the wall but soon ran out of wall space, besides it's hard to keep it clean. Then I went to the rolling drawer units. That worked OK but took up alot of room under my counters. Then I discovered the Madeira Polyneon thread chest and fell in love with it! All the colors fit into it, 1100yd spools, and it only takes up a 15" square area on my counter. So as I use up the Marathon poly thread I doubt I'll be replacing it. The Madeira is almost as cheap, good quality and both my machines love it. DH has already claimed the drawers when I empty them!

I want to have my hubby install some peg board and use a plastic curtain for covering when not in use. Right now, it's in clear matchbox car boxes by color family. Stuff I use repeatedly, is on a rolling cart beside machine.
