Anyone have a Cricut machine? I heard that it will cut material too. Is this true? I don't do scrapbooking, but I was thinking for appliques and such. What do you think? Don't know if it's worth it just for that though. I am a teacher, so I'm sure it would come in handy in the classroom.

The other moderator here, Dawn has one and will probably post when she sees this thread. I'm sure she'll have lots of good info that will help you.
In the meantime, here is a thread which she posted some things she's done with hers http://www.embroidables.com/forums/showthread.php?t=901&highlight=cricut

Thanks for posting that thread. I just don't know... I want a snap press too, which is less expensive. I guess I should start saving my money and see where it takes me!

It's funny I was just looking at one of these in a Michaels flyer today. My problem is with so many models I don't know what I need. I don't do scrapbooking but I do make cards.
My husband is dying for Christmas ideas for me and I would like to tell him one of these but I don't know which one. I guess I'll have to do some research.

I think I'm going to go with the expressions model if/when I get one. I think it's the biggest one. Any other recommendations from those who have them would be good though.

Check out the Quickutz Silhouette. I am not sure what all it cuts. I just bought one and I use it to cut vinyl. I think it is very similar to the cricut.
One difference I know is that you can use any true type font form your computer with the Silhouette, I think with the cricut you have to have cartridges! That would save a ton of money on buying cartridges.
Hope this helps, it look like we are doing 2 different things with the machine but let me tell you it won't take yo ulong before you start useing the vinyl part of hte cutter! You will find anything to stick the vinyl on!!!!

Hi....I'm Stitchn-Jeans' daughter.....I do have a Cricut machine....and yes you can cut fabric and appliques.....you just need a good iron-on backing (adhesive on both side) to make it firm and stable enough to cut it.....
You can also go to the Cricut MB to learn more about...
I have had the Baby Bug and the "E" for about 2yrs......it's one of the best machines I have owned other then my 2 Husqvarna Viking sewing machines....
Good luck....Rita

I have a Cricut, but I haven't used it with fabric yet. I have the Expression and I love it. I have used it to make cards, wall art, and for scrapbooking. The best advice I can give is to shop around and never pay full price. I would never buy one from Michaels, JoAnns, or AC Moore because they do not let you use a coupon (although AC Moore occasionally has a special where you get the Expression, 4 cartridges, and inks for $319 and that's a pretty good deal). There are several sites that usually offer great deals on the Cricut. You can check out www.customcrops.com or www.ohmycrafts. There are others, but I can't remember them off hand.

I know this is an older post but since I remembered this question and just ran across a video on how to cut fabric I thought I'd update this thread with the video link.YouTube - Cut FABRIC with your CRICUT

I love my quickutz silhouette. I am starting to play with it more and just did some really cute letters that I stuck onto painted canvas for my son's room It cost me about $12 for the canvas and I already had the different color vinyl. I even labeled his school supplies with the vinyl too.

Anyone thinking of buying the Cricut might want to check out JoAnn Fabrics now. The ad I got the other day shows they have them on sale for only $99 right now instead of the regular price of $199. Great deal!
Click here for the page online (http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat2005&PRODID=xprd810738&utm_source=Joann&utm_medium=Email&utm_term=Prd1&utm_content=HTML&utm_campaign=EML20090806-D&rId=EML20090806-D)(It's hard to tell if the stores are also having the same sale on these as it wasn't clear)

This post was so helpful that I finally bought a Cricut last night on the Canadian shopping channel. I went to WalMart in Canada and the expression had gone up to over $400 with no cartridges and for the limited use I wanted it for I could not justify the price. I happened to get an e-mail from the shopping channel that said that the smaller machine with 5 cartridges and some tools was the day's showstopper for $229. It didn't seem like a bad deal.
What I want it for is to make signs for our cottage. I am thinking of making a stencil of the design I want and then painting wooden signs. I checked into having signs made and it was going to cost about $150 each -- since we need them in 4 places this seemed crazy. If I can do it with the cricut I will be ahead and still have the machine for cardmaking.
Anyone have any helpful suggestions on making the signs!?

I know that this is really a STUPID question.....but you know I am kind of dumb anyway! You all talk about the cricut and I have never seen one and don't know what all they are used for. Can someone explain it to me?It may be something that I like and want. Everyone sounds so excited about it, I want to play too! (LOL)

The Youtube video will show you some of what the Cricut can do. It's basically a machine that will cut paper/vinyl/fabric. You buy design cartridges for the shapes/lettering you want to use. I have only seen the demos so I'm sure others know much more than me.
If you go to the Cricut website you can get more information.
