If I see a cute saying on a t-shirt and I embroider that same saying on my own t-shirt, is that copy writing? There was no copy write symbol or wording on the t-shirt saying that the words are owned by anyone.
I would think as long as you are using it for your personal use and not selling it, it would be ok. I may be wrong so if I am someone correct me... You could also make it a little different by changing the font and style of the saying.

A writer's work is protected by copy right law as soon as the ink touches the paper. Regardless of whether there is a copyright symbol or not. Some phrases are public domain, but you would need to talk with an intellectual properties attorney to know for sure if you could use the phrase you are thinking about.

The safest way is to use those commercial idea's as inspiration and create something orignal of your own. It really is not hard to be orignal just give it a go !
