I'm starting to get the hang of it, however, the biggest hurdle is...I'm a MAC user and Stuffit Expander doesn't recognize the embroidery files I download. The prez of THIS company responded so nicely and will try to do more for MAC users in the future. For now, I'm kind of stuck!
What's Embid? What's the best way to organize embroidery that does not have names attached to them? Frustrating when I can't SEE them nor can I bring them up under a name, just a number.

Embird is a digitizing program. I don't have it yet, but have been told part of that program will allow you to see the files. I know nothing more about it however.

I'm not too familar with MAC's so I'm of limited help there. My husband was Apple certified years ago and repaired them for years and knows them inside and out, but not me. Anyway, I know when I download a file that is just numbers or something other than the name of the file, I change the name or add something to it to tell me what it is later. Can you do that with the MAC?

I have embird. I don't digitize, although you can purchase that section of the program. I use Embird to put designs together. Like .. I have a pattern of children's faces, so I pick one of those, then add my daughter's name under it. You then save it to a disk to transfer the design to your machine. You can also use it to put mulitple designs together... I like it, but wish I had more time to explore all the possiblities it has.

Do some research as to what you want to do with embroidery to figure out what program(S) you want. Embird basic is just that- you can end up spending a lot of money to do "add-ons". An example of an add on is Monogramming- although I didn't buy that add on- I put fonts together without it. :)
If you google Embird- you can down load for 30 days free.

Good luck!

I use Embird the same way that Dana uses it. I am thinking about getting the digitizing side of the program but I'm just not sure if I need to get into digitizing or not LOL

But for what I use the program for, Embird is invaluable to me :)

Oh! Thanks so much everyone for the great advice! I will look it up! :)
Since you are so helpful, another question:

Have you heard of decreasing the density of a design after downloading it? I bought some fabulous chef designs to use on aprons and boy are they dense! An employee of a sewing shop and my embroidery teacher both said they put it into their software (can't afford it quite yet!) and decrease the density. I HAVE skipped a stitch section and glad I did since it really was too much and I was breaking needles and the design came out fine.

Thank you!!:D

Thanks! I'll try it out. I'm getting differing thoughts/comments about decreasing the density from various sources and don't know which advice to take! Why do you do it? Do you think it helps?
thanks again!

I dug out an old computer in the house and a friend gave me her software so I can see the designs. I've also been able to organize them now. I will really be interested in digitizing by next summer. Who do you recommend?
Thanks!

Basic Embird is more of an editing program. If you purchase the Iconizer plug-in, you can see all of your designs in the files.

Embirds Iconizer let's you see your designs as icons in your file folders, I couldn't find anything without it!

I had Embird Basic with Iconizer for over 2 years before I added Font Engine. Since I have no desire to digitize I feel that's all I need. I can edit designs, as in removing parts I don;t want, adding text, changing colors, sizes and stitching order. AS for lettering, I can us any font that's on my computer or any TTL font I can download, either $$ or free.

As for the density, I slightly enlarge the design and choose the check box NOT to alter the density. This spreads out the stitches just a bit, making it less dense. I've had the most success doing it this way.

A few years ago when I bought my first machine and was trying to decide about software I learned that NONE of the softwares will work on MAC. I had to buy another computer because we have always been hardcore MAC users.
