Ladies, it has been a long time since I have been able to talk with you. Things were very hectic during the holidays, and I have just now found time to relax a little. My embroidery business is doing great, but I need your advice. I trust your expertise. I have 15 men's shirts to embroider initials on the cuffs. I need to know the recommended height and width of the initial. I found the placement advice on the internet but not a word about how large. This gentlement wants a very classic initial. I am thinking 1inch tall and 2 inches wide. Let me know what you do. Thanks, The Hen

Hen,

I just checked a couple of places...my husband has a shirt that was monogrammed by Lands End and my nephew works in an upscale mens store. Both the Lands End shirt and my nephews measurements for cuff monograms were about the same. For a circle monogram the tallest height is 1" and the same for a diamond monogram.

For a traditional 3 letter monogram (Times New Roman or a similar font) I usually keep it under 5/8". These probably sound really small, but if you print out the template and put it on the cuff first, you will see that it is just about the right size.

What I would suggest, since you have 15 shirts to do, is to go to a second hand store (Goodwill or the like) and buy a man's dress shirt. Stitch out a sample on each of the cuffs in two different sizes and have your customer choose which they prefer.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I never thought about the shirt sample, what a great idea. I think I will pull some of my husband's old dress shirts and monogram the cuffs. I will give his workshirts some class.
