I have the best sewing buddy in the world. We love to get together to sew and quilt. We are considering starting a small sewing business on the side. We both work full time jobs so this will just be a part time thing. I was wanting advice from anyone who may already be doing this for the public. We are thinking about offering custom embroidery, making baby quilts and doing some childrens clothing. We thought that we may start an etsy or ebay store and also have some things in some local shops. Would this be worth our trouble? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Given this economy, I might start slow-a few things in local stores would give great feedback on what sells and what pricepoints the market will bear, which varies wildly by location. If you have a few things made, maybe "test list" a few on etsy. They have very nice merchandise.
The main thing is after your time and expense, do you make a profit?? I have made a few items, mainly for friends or co-workers. The money I made only gave a little over cost when my time was factored in, but I did it because I enjoy it.
Don't want to sound negative, but starting slow will let you build, as well as see how you enjoy it. My aunt used to sew for the public and finally quit. It was a nightmare, with some people never picking up finished garments, or complaining about the finished product. She worked full time and did this at night. People would call or come by at all hours, regardless of her posted times.
Good luck!!

I have started my own embroidery business. Working with the public can be good and bad. I have the best customers and only a few that were a nightmare. I go to craft shows, and attend the local county fair. It has been slow going, but I love it doing this for my job. Wishing you the best.
