View Full Version : Anyone else frustrated by toy recalls?

Ok, I just had to vent.

It is the Christmas season and those of us with kinder on their shopping list usually give toys. But it seems like everyday there is some new lead paint scare. I check the Consumer Product Safety Commision website http://www.cpsc.gov/index.html to keep on on what not to buy for the kids on my list. But the rest of my family do not but still are freaking out about it. So I get my FIL telling my MIL and I that all the Dora toys have been recalled and that my MIL cannot buy my niece a Baby Alive because he thinks they are made in China. My sister is no better, she refused to let my nephew have any of the toys I bought him for his recent birthday untill she checked to see if they are recalled...whenever she gets around to it. I told her that I already checked but she said "don't worry, I'll look". I did not realized that I had a problem with the whole "reading" thing.

I realize that lead paint is a serious problem and that these toy recalls are causing problems especially for charities like the Salvation Army (they are having to check each toy received against a recall list and it is killing their ability to get other things done) but I am going nuts will all the people around me overreacting without the right information.
I was just wondering if anyone else was having this problem?

I'm not really having a problem with it but I am totally frustrated that it's happening. JenZ I think the solution for you may be to give the gifts as you planned and then the list of recalled toys to the parent of the child getting that gift so they can see it's not on that list. It's scary because a child that does get lead poisoning has a long time of doctor visits and other stuff. I had a friend who lives in an old farmhouse and her youngest daughter got lead poisoning from the paint in the house. She had to take her daughter to the doctor for over three years for checkups and I believe shots and then on top of that, you have the health department bugging you too so they can be sure your child is getting the proper help with that since the doctors by law must notify the health department of anyone getting lead poisoning. UGH

Good thing I can embroider gifts because that's what everyone's getting from me. At least they haven't found our threads to be a problem. LOL

We thought by spending more money on good quality toys we wouldn't have to worry about lead paints...ie Thomas ect.
Guess that's not the way to go. Guess I shouldn't rule out the toys from the dollar store. They're probably ok!

I stopped shopping at Dollar General and Family Dollar earliler this year when it was found they were selling toothpaste that was made wrong (dangerously wrong) and putting the Colgate name on that to sell here in the U.S. I don't trust items from those stores any longer because of that.
If you aren't aware of that one it's found here (http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/colgate06_07.html) Most of the stores selling this were found to be the dollar store types.

It is a great idea but I really do not want to explain to a couple of three year old's why santa did not bring them any toys.

p.s they will be getting embroidered stuff too

The kids in my son's class usually get a teeny car or something.

This year, we are going to monogram them a christmas tree ornament, and put it in a bag with some candy.

And I thought making cupcakes for all the kids in the class was a big deal! You will make the other parents feel inadequate, heh heh.

Congrats on your 100th post, Yeffie

What ornaments are you doing? Is there a pattern? I was trying to think of something to monogram for ds' kindergarten class. Oh please, do tell!
