I was just looking on the Inspirations page and say the wrapping paper and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I need to find some blank pillowcases and using the Candy Cane Alphabet, make some big bags for gifts that you then get the pillowcase for afterwards. No paper to the land fill site that way.

Have a great day

I did that last year after seeing the pottery barn santa bag in the catalog.
You can find cheap ones at Wal-Mart and TJ Maxx.
I now do a ton of pillowcases for gifts and bags.
Good luck!

I love this page- I never thought to use pillow cases as gift bags. What a great idea! Thanks for letting us in on the inspiration!

I love pillowcases!

There is a tutorial out there for making them somewhere, and I made bajillions of them last Christmas!

I just did a pillowcase for a customer with their school name on it. She said was using it a gift bag for her teenage daughter.

I like to buy vintage, unused pillowcases with pretty crochet along the ends and put designs and monograms on them.

Pillowcases are great for glow-in-the-dark threads, too... I did quite a few on black pillowcases (300TC from Wal-Mart if I remember correctly) for customers in October.

That said, you're not limited to Halloween, either... Stars could be made in the glow thread, text...

Plus, little kids love anything with their names on it. A pair of ice skates from Simply Stitches with the budding Michelle Kwan's name would make an awesome pillowcase. Or the future Chicago Cub's name with the baseball, bat, or glove from My Mind's Eye...limitless possibilities and such great fun!
Fourth of July with fireworks, birthday with party hat or cupcakes...I think I'd better get some pillowcases this week! You all are such an inspiration!

We discussed this on a thread before this one about buying pillow cases. You can purchase them in bulk at Sam's Club Wholesalers for $14 (I think that gets you a dozen). They are 250 thread count. For a gift bag that would be fun. I also do drawstring bags (the silky polyester kind) with different designs on them for baby gifts. When you have a baby, you can't have too many bags! They fold away nice and small into a diaper bag as well but are waterproof so you can put bottles in them etc. So it's fun to always think of inexpensive bags etc as an external wrapping for your showcase to your gift as well.
Thanks all for the wonderful ideas!

Thanks for the pillowcase idea. My sister makes all her gift wrap bags, but that's just too much for me to endeavor to accomplish right now. The pillowcases I can do! I have a bridal shower coming up next month. Guess what the wrapping "paper" will be????

Glow in the dark! I never gave that one a thought.

hhhhhhmmmmm I see a thread purchase in my future!

The pillowcases are always a big hit for gifts for the very young to even Grandpa too!

So does anyone have easy instructions on making pillowcases?

for my kids

arlis...i myself...look for the highest thread count king size sheet
i can find on sale...white is my preference...I make a lot of toddler size pillows and use the travler pillows they have at walmart as my pillow inserts....i measure it and add 1/2 inch for stitching and of course add the desired amount at the open end to over hang...I will post angain the measurements I use for a toddler pillow...for adults use the stand or king or queen pillow deminsions to make them....

What a wonderful idea for those odd to wrap gifts. I know what project I am going to work on this summer. I have 4 grandchildren, 2 boys and 2 girls , I am planning on a couple for each. Wht a wonderful graduation gift, if you know what school they are going to be attending.

This is just the best idea! I am going to start stocking up on pillowcases right now, and everytime I get a chance, decorate one!

I made personalized pillowcases for all the kids in my family year before last, it was easy, but took forever. I like this idea even better. I would love to see some of the ones you all make, just for a little inspiration.

If you could get a hold of a black pillowcase, you could put the cute Halloween designs on it, and use that as a trick or treat bag.

Oh I like that, and it would even help people to see the child with it--safety issue?

That's a great idea to use black pillowcases and glow in the dark threads. You still have lots of time that you could buy some white ones and dye them too. I'm not sure I've seen any black ones before that aren't made of silk.

You could sew in some neon reflective material into some sort of bright shape, like a pumpkin. Then it would be cute and safety conscious!

Never thought of dying them. I suppose they would have to be all cotton?

I have done the pillowcase and used a jump rope (much older child) for a ribbon to tie close. She loved using every part of the gift and wrapping.

Here are pictures of the pillowcase I did after we all discussed doing it with the glow in the dark threads. My son and I just pulled them out today, to put on his bed. He loves them! The Candy Cane alphabets were done in orange and yellow (glow in the dark) from JoAnn Fabrics. I also used it on the light parts of the candy corn, and the word Halloween.
