I am trying to do FSl Christmas ornaments and when it comes to a thick part the needle starts to catch underneath and breaks the thread. I am new to the FLS and am not sure what I am doing wrong.
I am using Coats and Clark embroidery thread on top with Coats bobbin thread under and a size 11 embroidery needle.
I am glad to have found this foum, it has some great topics on it and I am looking forward to contributing.

Did you solve your problem? I have never tried FSL... but would like too. There are some really nice designs of it out there.

Well it took about 4 days of frustration, but I finally found out that it was the thread I was using.
I was using Coats and Clark embroidery thread on top and the same brand bobbin thread, then after b Joy suggested I use the same thread top and bottom it got a little better, but if it had to embroider over a thick part it would crunch and often break the thread.
Finally one day I did one of my little ornaments in a red thread that was a Royal brand and it whipped right through. Not catching on I went back to the white and again problems.
Then I did another coloured one and again it whipped right through. That's when it occured that it might be the thread so I switched again to colour and it was fine.
Not having any Royal white spools, I even tried a white serger thread and it worked beautifully, I even liked the effect it gave. So I have put all my Coats thread aside and bought some Royal white and am just humming along.
I used to do a lot of FSL on my Janome and never had a problem, but also never used Coats thread in it.
I kind of laughed to myself, because whenever someone says to me that they are having a problem with their machines I always tell them to first change their needle and then change their thread, and here I was not heading my own advice.
So p3 don't be afraid to try the lace. It is a lot of fun and I am always amazed at how beautiful it looks.
Have a great day everyone. We had snow yesterday morning, rain yesterday afternoon and now more snow this morning, so I guess it is an indoor day good for sewing.

I didn't exactly switch. I still have my janome 9500, but I wanted a larger sewing field and to be able to download directly from the computer so I went with the Singer XL 6000 after doing a lot of on line research. I know that the Singers had a bad name for a long time, but the top of the line are made by Tajima who makes most of the industrial sergers and such and have a good reputation.
In all honesty if I could have afforded the new top of the line Janome I would have gotten it, but it was cost dictated.
I love the Singer and aside from the thread problem it has been a great machine. I kept the Janome (just in case) and will probably use it for 4x4 designs that I can download with the Magic Box.
That is about the only drawback I can think of with the Singer is that the hoops go from a 2x2 for monograms to a 5x7 and then the big hoop.
I do love the automatic needle threader as well as the automatic bobbin threader. Especially when I am embroidering.
have a great day

I realized that my machine doesn't seem to like the polyester threads for some reason. It prefers the rayon.
I don't know if it is the texture of the poly or not.
I was doing another project today with a variety of threads and when I tried to use the Coats and Clark it started acting up again. As soon as I switched to the rayon it worked like a charm.
Now I am stuck with about 15 spools of the Coats which I will probably give to my friend and see if they are okay in her machine.
What kind of machine are you using?
