This one I made for my aunt. It is brown with a pink monogram. It also has a brown with pink dots fabric liner.

That is super cute! I make those too, but I am too lazy to line them! I never could quite get the hang of it! How did you do the circle of dots?

Thank you so much! The only reason I started the liners was because my mil wantd a pocket in her purse and I didn't know how to add a pocket without it showing and looking horrible. The circle of dots is from Monogram Wizard Plus program.

I love it! You did a great job.
Purses are one of my favorite things to make. You can do so much to make them unique. I get stopped all the time by people who want to look at my purse.

I bought a ton of really nice placemats last year after the holidays at Kohl's hoping to make purses but still haven't made even one. I need to get past my fear of trying something new with sewing and just start diving in I think. I KNOW in my head that I can do it and can actually visualize the final product but for some reason I just have this fear of starting which is really stupid.

Well, if you'll tell my knee to cooperate so I can move around then maybe I'll get on that soon. I FINALLY made the decision today about what I wanted to buy from Embroidables so maybe I can use some of those. It only took me two weeks to decide what to buy.

Fun2sew has made these purses. They are very cute! Simple to make. I like the circle of dots. I'll have to look for designs like these. I don't have ones like that. Never thought of it. Now I know what to use them for!

that is a very good looking placemat purse.
where do you find your placemats?

I have never tried a placemat purse, but I think it would be a great place to put a Dolly Mama design.

I have tried at least four times to look for those I have and where they came frome and have been sidetracked every single time. UGH I hope to find those before the end of the weekend for you.

I have made several placemat purses.
The one is made from two different colored placemats with a home dec rope trim. The handles are from extra placemat pieces. It has a lining with a pocket and one of those magnetic closures.
The other is not a placemat puse but is made similar..just with fabric instead of a placemat. I made the beaded tassel on the front. My second try at that. I liked doing it.
The mongrams are from Magnificient Monograms.

I love these placemat purses! I've never tried any of them before, but Mom and I used to make some fabric purses that were similar. I loved selecting coordinating fabrics, and what fun fun it would be to wander through housewares looking for that perfect shade of placemat! Nice work!

I checked my files and I do have about 10 different sets of instructions to make these but they are from other sites that can't be posted. Just do a search for "placemat purse instructions" and you'll find lots of them.
I did find this one (http://www.executivehomemaker.com/content.asp?pid=3&id=633)but this is only one way of making them although it does give some basic info which could help you come up with something else on your own. (click the pics on that site and they will get much larger so you can view them easily)
Here are some directions from Dritz that might help too. http://www.dritz.com/brands/projects/project_files/p_placemat.php

I have found the best place to find placemat purses is at Kohls. They always have a great selection. I always look for something a little stiff. It just makes the purse look better. I found some at Walmart after Thanksgiving that were just $.50 each. They were khaki and olive colors and made of a suede material.

This is where I got some awesome looking ones that are similar to a damask material with satin areas and "flat" colors if that makes sense. They were practically giving them away right after the holidays. And when did *I* buy the huge pile of about 15 that I bought to make placemat purses? A YEAR AGO! I am SO bad at the old saying of, "JUST DO IT"! LOL

I found those handles at Hobby Lobby, but you can also find them at Walmart or Michaels, etc. I have also found old purses at our local thrift store that I take the handles off of. I bought those for $1 each!

That's a great idea! I'll have to keep that in mind. A great way to recycle.

It looked like you used the kind of placemat that is really stiff. Is that hard to work with? Do you have to sew the seams any differently?
