Here's a jacket I embroidered quite awhile ago using a couple of the paisley designs from the site. It took 12 hours of computer work to edit and get the designs combined to exactly how I wanted them, and 18 hours to stitch out.

I've worn it once.

Such a shame to do all that work and only wear it once. I tend to do the same thing, though. Not that I sew for me. But it seems like if I put too much time in an outfit for the kids, I am sick of seeing it by the time they have worn it once.

The jacket looks great. I am impressed!!

Thanks for all the kind words, I really appreciate it! To answer a few questions...

3 hoopings total. I did the design in 3 tiers starting at the bottom and working my way up. 18 hours of embroidery time, and because of the weight of the jacket, I had to babysit it the entire time. No, I didn't do it in one sitting! I would have driven myself crazy if I had! :D

dee, if you'd ever met my husband, you'd know I have the patience of Job. :p

ewig, I've found I edit a majority of the designs that I use. For the jacket, I obviously needed a much larger design, so I combined, copied & pasted, etc. until I had the size I needed that would fit my largest hoop. I had to cut out some parts of the design in many places so it would fit together like a puzzle. I took some parts out and added them to other places. It really was like a jigsaw puzzle. Tedious work, but worth it. :)

Hello, I'm the new kid on the block. Love the Jacket!!! OMG! It is just beautiful:) I am new to embroidery. My mom passed away Oct 2006 :( and left me all her sewing stuff. Welcome to our website. I'm sorry the hear about your Mom. Be careful getting into Embroidery, it's very addictive. If you don't believe me, just check out the "Are you a hoarder" thread. http://www.embroidables.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81

I noticed that you are from Washington. If you have the time, you should try to go to Sewexpo in Feb. http://www.sewexpo.com/

We're glad to have you here. I'm sure that you'll make a lot of friends.

Wow!

That was a lot of work. I was at the fabric store a few days ago, and someone embroidered a coordinating jacket and jeans. She removed in inner leg seam, then embroidered the coordinating design up the outer leg side seam and along the hem. So very cute. I'd like to use the same idea and make a pair of jeans and jacket using the gingerbread house and gingerbread designs. Chances are looking pretty slim that I'll get it done by Christmas, though.

Keep up the good work!

ooooOOOOoooHHH.....maybe it is a GHOST jacket?? j/k

I love what you did although it is not my style. I have often looked at the paisley embroidables designs and thought they would look sharp on denim (like on a little pair of jeans for my niece)...you proved me right! And I looooove being right!

Crum - I LOVE your jacket. It makes me wish I had a much larger embroidery field so I could do something like that without have to hoop 20 times.

I know you said it took 18 hours to embroider, but how many stitches were there?

I have a jacket that I embroidered on (not embroidable designs :( ) that I donated to a silent auction. I don't remember how many hours it took to make, but it had over 250,000 embroidery stitches. The person in charge of the silent auction obviously had no appreciation for the work I put into the jacket, because she put the starting price at $25! I ended up buying the jacket for myself for $30. I guarantee that I won't be wasting my talent on something like that again....

I know how you feel, I just made some things for our silent auction at work and I am afraid of what they are going to start the bidding at. Last year the woman in charge set the starting bids ridiculously low. This year the two women I work with promised me that the starting bids would be set higher. If they had not I would not have made anything for it.

Sew 'N Sane
11-27-2007, 07:55 PM
I know that people want to get great deals at Silent Auctions, but by placing the starting price so low, I don't think anybody really appreciated the value of the jacket. I told her that it should start at $75, and she put the value at $75. The jacket itself cost $25!

Another thing that drove me crazy was that one mom spent $200 on a pair of Coach sunglasses for her 16 year old daughter! How nuts can you be to spend that kind of money on something your child is likely to lose or break!!!

Oh well, I feel like I got the best end of the bargain because I helped out the group and I got to keep my work of art..:p

JenZ
11-27-2007, 08:03 PM
Well thing is if it is for charity aren't people eager to give more? We do a silent auction at school and if something's value is $50 it will usually go for $70 because purse strings are a little looser when it comes to charity.

And what do you think are the odds of that 16 year old appreciating the value of those 200 dollar sunglasses....I could go into a rant about how we did not get a phone in our house till I turned 16 and my mamma was lucky to make 200 dollars in two weeks waiting tables at the local crapp restaurant...
needlesss to say, spoilt teenagers really tick me off.

Sew 'N Sane
11-27-2007, 08:48 PM
Jen I know what you mean about spoiled teenagers. I certainly wouldn't spend that on one of my kids.

My 18 year old son learned the value of the dollar this past summer. He CHOSE to not do some of his work in one of his classes and he ended up having to take 2 sessions of summer school. Mean mom that I am, I made him get a job and pay me back. After all, it wasn't my fault that he failed. Needless to say, ever since he started working he hasn't asked me for a thing! I can't wait for the rest of my kids to be old enough to work!:p

Go buy a jacket in the thrift stores and test out on that. If it works and the jacket isn't one you'd wear, donate it back to the homeless mission in town. Then go buy a new one and make one you love. ;)

Oh my gosh, I've been so busy, sorry! I had a boy in June of last year, and am due for a little girl in a few months. Needless to say, I'm a little tired. Lol! To answer your questions, I think there were something like near 80+ color changes, 100,000+ stitches, and nope, never wear it. I had it on display at the sewing gallery I worked at, but that's about it. I think I've worn it once. I was so fed up with it by the time I was done, that I just didn't want to look at it any longer.
