Just wondering if anyone here has opened an etsy shop. My mom and I have considered it, but we've been bombarded with holiday orders so we haven't been able to "sew ahead" and do some more generic things appropriate for etsy.
And, oh, how addicting is etsy?!? There are so many neat things there! So many creative people!!

Forgive my ignorance, but what is an "etsy" shop? Inquiring minds want to know...:D

Etsy is a selling site where individuals sell things that are all homemade by various fields in the crafting arena. You really need to watch what you buy there as not everyone "knows" the proper way to prepare fabrics before doing different things on it. In another community I am in there's been quite a few women that have purchased cute things for their babies and after one washing they are trash because of paint runs and embroideries unravelling on them etc. This has happened to a lot of them who've purchased. Of course, not everyone sells items that will do that and some are very good and are selling a quality product. Just like any craft fair you go visit, you'll find things well made and worth the money and others that you KNOW to walk away from because you can see the inferior craftsmanship. That's probably the best way to describe Etsy ~ an online craft sale.

Sorry- I was out all day yesterday... It's at etsy.com.
Vicki addressed this well. Etsy is like an online craft bazaar. And she's right about quality as well- though I've been incredibly pleased with most everything I've bought there.

No, it's not like Ebay. Ebay is an auction site, this is not. This is a craft sale/fair type of site where you see what you like and buy it or order it if they do personalizations.

Have to chime in here about etsy. I have bought a few things from there in the last couple months and have been thrilled with my purchases!!! However, I couldn't agree more with Vicki about being careful...thanks for the heads up.
I bought the most adorable apron for one of my dear friends little girl. It was top notch in quality!!!
If you haven't checked it out, you must go NOW...www.etsy.com!

I do have a etsy store, but I never put anything on it because I don't have time.

I LOVE etsy... everything is so original.. at least in the areas I "shop". I'm totally addicted to the Amigurmi crochet patterns and etsy has the best and most original selection.
I've thought about an etsy shop for my cloth diapers, but I am not sure that is the correct venue ofr good sales.

OK, here's the scoop on amigurumi crochet:
Amigurumi
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Amigurumi (編み包み, Amigurumi? lit. Knitted stuffed toy) is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small stuffed animals and anthropomorphic creatures. Amigurumi are typically cute animals (such as bears, rabbits, cats, dogs, etc.), but can include inanimate objects endowed with anthropomorphic features. Amigurumi can be either knitted or crocheted. In recent years crocheted amigurumi are more popular and more commonly seen.
Amigurumi are usually crocheted or knitted out of yarn. The simplest designs are worked in spirals. In contrast to typical Western crochet the rounds are not usually joined. They are also worked with a smaller size hook in proportion to the weight of the yarn in order to create a very tight-looking fabric without any gaps through which the stuffing might escape. Amigurumi are usually worked in sections and then joined, except for some amigurumi which have no limbs, only a head and torso which are worked as one piece. The extremities are sometimes stuffed with plastic pellets to give them a life-like weight, while the rest of the body is stuffed with fiber stuffing.
The pervading aesthetic of amigurumi is cuteness. To this end, typical amigurumi animals have an over-sized spherical head on a cylindrical body with undersized extremities.
I have indeed seen on Etsy adorable little animals, food items (like cupcakes, ice cream cones) all done in a tight little crochet stitch. Cute as can be. Let me see if I can find one quickly and include a link here before I post this reply.
Oh, yeah, here you go! This one seems to separate the animals and such from the food stuffs...whatever, they're all quite adorable.

I don't have a shop but I've thought about opening one. I need a way to bring in extra money when my ex fails to pay his support and with the cost of child care I need something i can do from home.
If anyone does have a shop they use can you tell us about it and what you think?
thanks
Something else I've learned from this site. Won't be posting for a little bit -- going to etsy-land.

Heather, Did you ever decide to open an etsy shop? I'm trying to decide what to do myself and needed some advice from someone that has done it before. I, like you, have bought several things on etsy and have been thrilled.

I'm in the process of opening an Etsy shop myself. I have the shop set up but haven't added anything to it just yet. I'm working on it but with two young kids, I'm having trouble finding the time!

I understand how that can be! I stayed home with my boys when they were small, and you would think there would be time to do stuff like this...but there's NOT! Now that they are driving, we never see them anymore and I miss those days! I do however find myself with a little extra time on my hands. I've set up a website, but that can take years to develop and gain a good customer base. So I thought Etsy might be the way to go. Let me know how you like it!

No, I haven't yet. Mom and I keep talking about it, but she's got her full-time job, and I've got Corinne and then enough custom orders to keep me busy... Maybe some day!! ;)

Sometimes I think I'm crazy to even consider it since squeezing in time for even more projects is near impossible with my little ones! I stay up way too late and they wake up way too early! My dh does tell me that one day they'll be sleeping until noon and that will drive me mad. We'll see, LOL! In the meantime, artsiegirl, you are more than welcome to borrow my 2 and 5 year olds anytime you want a trip down memory lane. ;)

Thanks so much for replying ladies. I'm still looking into opening one, but it may have to wait 4 weeks for summer break!

Doesn't it cost to list on Etsy? and don't you have to pay per item? I don't know that much about it either. Maybe I should go to Etsyland myself and read up.

I think it's about $0.20 per listing and then you pay like 3.5% to Etsy when you actually sell the item. I don't think that's too bad actually. I'm considering opening one, too. Did anyone ever say that they had one? I wonder if anyone has sold anything with Embroidables designs on there...anyone?

I was wanting to open up a shop. Still reading through the set-up. Anyone have any advice. Are we all known on this board as Hopeless Embroidery Addicts. Does that ever fit the bill!

Okay, mine is open now. It is indeed .20 per item to list something, and then 3.5% when you sell something. So far I only have a few items up, but I've ordered some new fabrics that should be here soon and then I'll really be in business! It's really very easy to set up and manage, although it's also a little addictive (both buying and selling!) Feel free to check mine out, but keep in mind it's brand new and has very few items! The name of my shop is Bellaboos, but it's sometimes hard to find that way. At the top of the screen where you can search, type in artsiegirl, and then click in the right-hand box to select sellers:usernames. You should find me there!

Artsie girl - I can't believe your shop is called Bellaboos! That's what I was gonna call mine!!! My dog's name is Bella and we always call her Bellaboo. That is so strange...and kinda scary ;) I'm going to check out your items now... ;)

Oh how odd...are we soul sisters or what? My dog's name is Precious Bella, and we call her Bellaboo all the time! That's also the name of my website, but it's just treading water until Summer!

My Bella's full name is Isabella's Southern Belle, but we usually call her Bellaboo, Boo, BooBoo, or sometimes just "special". My other dog's name is Sophie's Sweet Dixie, and we call her Sophie, Soph, Sopapia, Sofafia...gosh, isn't it weird how you name a dog one thing and you call them 20 different things! It's amazing they know all of their names! Are kids' names the same way? I know I've been called me all sorts of variations of Katherine - Kati, KK, Kate, Kay, Kati Bug, Kati Belle...
I can't wait to see your web site! I do some web site design for other people on the side for fun...just simple stuff. It's one of my "other" hobbies... ;) I enjoy it, but I'd rather be sewing or embroidering lately... the technology changes too quickly for me with the web stuff! ;)
