Attached is a photo of a leather luggage tag I made for my daughter. On the other side is her last name, city, state, and cell phone number. The design is from Embroidables Kangaroo and Joey's frog set.

I was thinking of the same thing. I have this dream of being done with Christmas gifts by July! These little tags would be so cute for gifts! Are there directions?

It is real leather--some lightweight samples I had in my stash. I have also done them on heavy canvas. For the leather I used an Organ titanium sharp 75 and slowed the machine down. The tag design was free on another forum but I just looked and it is no longer there. My kids (all grown) are each getting two of these in their stockings this year. It was fun finding designs that each one could relate to. They are all different. I made some for myself and DH and it sure made finding our luggage at the airport a lot easier!

No directions? Bummer! I would like to make some of these for my girls to use on their backpacks! They would make fun "back to school" goodies ! I'll have to start after Christmas to make sure I get them done!:o

Too cute!!!
Did you stitch the name, address, and cell phone number on the reverse, or did you just write it on.
Great idea to use some of those leather stash scraps that I wasn't sure what to do with.
Thanks!

The name, etc. are stitched on.
I took a tag design and edited it and made one design for each side. The first side had the name, address, etc. and the outline of the tag. I did it on cutaway stabilizer. After stitching I cut the stabilizer away right at the outline. Then I did the other side which was the picture design and I stopped it after the outline of the tag. This part was done on a washaway stabilizer. After the outline was done I placed the the other side of the tag on the bottom side of the hoop, adhering it with adhesive spray and matching the outlines of the two pieces. I stitched another outline, removed the hoop, and cut the leather right next to the stitching--on the top piece and the bottom piece. Then I finished the design.

That is adorable. Would make a great gift tag, too, especially if you used a froggie theme for the gift. Thanks for posting.

That really is cute. Something to think about though. I had read before a caution in making luggage tags using address and home phone numbers. By putting the address and home phone number on them it gives those that stalk airports the necessary info to go clean out the house knowing the owner of that luggage is off on vacation and have no clue until they return that they were robbed. I read it should only be your name and a cell phone number.

On the tags I have made, I have put last name, town, and cell phone number. I put the cell phone number because if there is a problem with your luggage while you are traveling, that would be the best way to reach you. I think for future tags I will leave the name of the town off of it. Thanks!

Yep, cell phone and name only is what I've heard is the safest. Name of town and person's name is very easy to track now adays on the internet.

Just wanted to say our Niece just called she had so many compliments on her little ones daycare tags!
So this is my call of thanks for the wonderful project!

Vicki, I am so glad you mentioned limiting the information you put on the tags. As I was reading this, I was thinking the exact same thing - you can never be too careful, espcially with the child predators out there. It's sad that we have to consider these things, but it's reality. So, happy and SAFE stitching ladies!

That's also the reason I refuse to embroider a childs name on anything. They have no clue if that person calling them by name is REALLY a friend of their Mommy or Daddy. I've had one person get really mad at me already for that but hey, too bad. My machine. My principles.

You know, I never thought about the name. I always considered address and phone number, but never the name. Thanks for mentioning that - I'll definitely consider it before doing any children's projects in the future!

I guess this hits me because I had a licensed daycare in my home for about 5-6 yrs and this was part of our training from pamplets they gave to read. When a child has something with thier name on it and someone (child abductor/pervert) calls thier name and pulls that "your mom told me to come get you for her because she's had an accident/is sick/car broke down or whatever excuse that child is going to think they must know me because they knew my name not realizing this person saw it on their backpack/coat/hat or whatever. The ONLY way I will embroider a childs name is if I know for a fact that child has a safety word he/she was given to know that person WAS sent by their Mom/Dad. If someone calls them and gives the child that story, the child asks for their password/safety word and if that person doesn't know it, they know to run.

I will put a child's name only if it is for an infant. I have always thought that was safe. What do y'all think?
stitchcrazy
02-28-2008, 06:37 AM
I think for an infant is probably safer than for a child, but I'd still be really careful.
Thanks for the tip on the code word, too. I don't have children yet, but I'll be sure to implement that idea when I do.

Sorry I didn't make it back again. I was not ignoring you. I'm really sick right now. I would think for any child that cannot walk or even mabye as old as 1 yr old you'd be fine. Anything over that I won't until they are at an age to understand a code word and can be tested by you and a friend they don't know to see if they would ask for that code word or not then until they are more mature in age I wouldn't do it.

You're welcome. The code word thing works good BUT as I hinted above, you need to test them every once in awhile. When you are supposed to pick them up somewhere don't show up on time and have a friend of yours they haven't seen before (maybe someone close to you that you work with etc) show up instead and tell them you can't get there and that they were sent to pick them up and take them to you. See if they ask this person for the code word. You obviously aren't going to not show up either, you are going to be close enough to keep an eye on them and watch to see how they handle it. You don't want to do this too often or they may feel overly secure and think you are around the corner watching.
There are just too many crazy people now adays and it's scary.

I see your point on testing them. I told my MIL about this this weekend. She's a fourth-grade teacher and she said she'd heard of the code word before, too. It's a great idea. Thanks for sharing.

nice cute luggage tag.
one of the things i want to do is luggage tag. because thats the easiest for me compared to bags etc......
earlier on, i tried to see if i can embroider names on the luggage tag but i think its better to write them down instead (for my case to fit everything in) ? all along, i wrote whole address, contact etc in those luggage tags given by travel agency. i think its fine for adults but not for kids? what if one lost the luggage and there is no tag to verify or call the owner?
Where can I get the tag template?!!?!?! I am going away on holiday in 2 weeks, and would love to do my own tags?!

Your tag is so cute, don't you just love that frog. I have seen him on everything from burp cloths to luggage tags. I think I will just have to buy him. I think your tag is a great idea. I teach school and I wish parents would label their kids bookbags someway. So many of this look alike. Of course, I teach fourth graders. I'm wondering if you could do something similar to this but slide the design into a acylic keychain holder or small acylic picture frame for more protection. Kids are rough on those bookbags and anything attached to them.

The tag design I used was a freebie on another forum but it is not there any more. I took a design of a luggage tag and edited it in Embird to make another design from it--using just the outline of the tag. On that design I added the name and in most cases, a cell phone number. I stitched that design on cutaway stabilizer and cut it out (the leather and the stabilizer). I stitched the other design, the original design, on tearaway. After stitching the frog design and then the outline, I cut off the excess, just like you would do for an applique. I sprayed the cutout of the first design and stuck it onto the bottom, lining up the stitches. Then I finished the stitching. Not sure if I explained this very well so ask questions if I didn't make it clear. When I got to the part where I was stitching through two layers of leather, I slowed the stitches down to 500 stitches per minute. I did these on a Deco 340.

Hey how about using a luggage tag design and make them for your childs backpack. You could maybe make it two fold and on the inside put necessary info. That way no strangers could come up and call the child by name. Or make a bus pass etc.. These would be hugely versatile.

I would think you could create whatever shape you want to use and use whatever design you want.
I think if you wanted to play around and try making these you could use a Pellon like the stiffness used inside a purse, your fabric and then some thick, clear vinyl to create a pocket for an information card to slide into.
Embroider your design onto the fabric you want to use. Then layer the Pellon, a piece of the vinyl and 2 pcs of fabric, stitch around three sides then turn right sides out so you have the vinyl on one side over top of the plain side of the fabric, and your embroidered fabric on the other side. Then top stitch all the way around enclosing the side which wasn't stitched allowing you to turn it all right sides out.
You will just need to play a bit to get the right layering done so that when they are all flipped right sides out the layers are in the right spots.
Then you would have a pocket created by the vinyl to slide a card into that with all the info you want to put for identity. I think with kids however that I'd probably put the childs first name only and maybe Mom's cell phone number so if the bag was lost it could be returned that way. If you put the home number and the childs name it's too easy to call and have the child meet a stranger somewhere as is the same with the childs address. And even if you just put the childs name and their home phone number, it's way too easy to track a home address by the home phone number and then you could get their last name and address in a matter of just a few more searches on the internet.

So cute, you could even put your name and address on the back maybe, or is that difficult with the design? It so cute and such a fun idea.
