I hope this is okay to post- I did the snowflakes myself in a text editing software program. Please feel free to yank the post if it's a problem.
My DD's sitter had me do several blankets for her to give as gifts, and they all had the family's names on them, so I knew she'd love this. I got two linen runners from Garnet Hill on clearance earlier this fall (should've bought a dozen!). I edited their surname and then the family names into snowflakes and embroidered them tone-on-tone onto the runner. Here are closeups of some of the names:

Lots of work- each one is hooped separately- but it turned out quite nicely in the end. Wish I could've gotten a pic of the whole thing, but I was in a rush to get it over to her.

Those are just beautiful! I would have loved to see the whole thing together, but I know how that goes when you have to get stuff delivered!

Those are nice. I hope they liked them.
Wow! Those are so cool! You do really nice work.
How did you ever think to create the snowflake?
I love them- what a great idea for next year's gifts! :wavey:

Great project! what font did you use? Is it as is or did you use a font editing program to get it to look like that?

Connie what software do you have? I know in my Husqvarna 3D software I have the capability of doing that type of thing using the "Encore" portion of the software.

Aw, thanks. But no need to bow! :o
Here are the slightly-edited instructions I sent to another member who PMed me:
I have the Embird software and their Font Engine, which allows you to make any true type font into an embroidable alphabet.
Here are the steps I did:
1. Type in name.
2. Copy name.
3. Make a mirror image (x-axis) the copy and butt it up against the original, creating the first snowflake "arm", if you will.
4. Copy and paste the two names (one snowflake arm).
5. Rotate the copy 60* (60 degrees), to make it the second snowflake arm.
6. Butt it up against the first arm.
7. Copy and paste BOTH arms.
8. Rotate the copy 120*, and butt it up against the first two arms.
9. Repeat steps 7 & 8 to create the 5th and 6th arms of the snowflake.
I experimented with a few cursive fonts, and with those names, that font worked best (embird #19). With DD's and my nephews' names, a different (non-embird original) font worked better.
HTH! If you have questions, let me know!

It's Embird's font #19, but it's also in my Microsoft Works as "Disciple". I just experimented with various cursive fonts to see what looked best. HTH!

Those are beautiful. I intend to get around to making some of those myself one of these days.
I have also seen the names arranged as flowers somewhere. I believe they used the names for the petal portion and then had a solid circle for the center and a satin stem and leaf (or maybe a flowerpot) underneath it.

Are these not the coolest things ever? I can't think of anyone who wouldn't like a name snowflake. Reminds me of a joke tie my grandfather had, probably from the 50's, with a word mirror-imaged up the center of the tie. Nice design. Naughty word, though, if you were clever enough to "see" it.

:D I was going to comment that this sounded a lot like my great grandfather....... 'til I realized it WAS my greatgrandfather. ;)
So, yes, Mom... your snowflakes are on the way soon!!! :flute:

I should spend more time on this site. A co-worker (another embroidery fanatic) used the name snowflakes on baby bibs. They were so cute. Your table runners are great. I am sure the person you gave them to loved them.

I think I replied to the previously...but I just figured out about the snowflake names. I looked a little closer this time. That makes it all the more "cool". And a very nice piece of work.

Thanks! When I gave it to Holly she did the same thing... "Oh, how pretty!"
I said, "Look close at the flakes...."
Then, "OOOOHHHHHHHHH! Oh, cool. Oh, that's so awesome..." ;)
