How cute are these towels? I'm going to go look for the font now. Do you use tearaway, water-soluble or cutaway on your towels??

I used tearaway.

Do you preshrink your towels before embroidering? Anyone ever used Williams and Sonoma waffle towels to embroider on? I bought some of their kitchen towels -- white with contrast color for my kitchen and they shrunk terribly. Their plain towels are so beautiful but I'm wondering if they would shrink as badly?
SewFanatic
11-09-2007, 11:42 AM
I used some of the W&S waffle towels also Ellen and had the same problem. I bought some cheap ones at another store and they didn't shrink as much. I have to admit that they were not as good of quality but the shrinkage was better.

My waffle towels have all shrunk and look icky now, too.

Would it be tacky to embroider and give those W&S towels and say they're just for looks only? I'd make a ton more of them and add ribbons and embellishments if I knew they weren't to be used. I know when I buy fun towels for the bathroom, etc. I have them just for looks. Maybe attach a tag or something? I bought some less expensive blanks from Wholesale Linens and prewashed them. They look horrible! I won't even embroider on them.

I dont think that would be tacky, but they will still end up needing washed at some point.

I don't think it would be tacky necessarily at all. For me however, I wouldn't know what to do with them as I have nowhere in my kitchen to hang cute towels, only those we use. I guess you'd need to judge for yourself as to whether the person you are giving them to would use them once and then toss them into the back of her closet never to be seen again, or if they have someplace they could have them showing off. I know that I'd love them but just wouldn't have someplace to hang them if they are only for show.
I'd much rather give something I know the person will be able to use. I'm not sure where everyone lives, but if you are near an IKEA they have awesome towels that I've done many designs on and everyone I've given them to keeps asking for more because they love them. IKEA sells a few kinds and one was a waffle weave that after washing prior to me doing my embrodiery they were horrible looking. I took those back and got my others I always get. Sadly, the ones I buy are blue and white. They are great though, even after washing. (You may be able to order them online from them too, I've never looked)

I don't think it is tacky at all. Most of the ones I make for myself (which is not many) I don't use...they are just for show.

Since you're in MI this may be close to you. I had bookmarked this when a few others in a yahoo group had said they were the best. I keep wanting to stop in there on one of our many trips to the Holland/GR area but we still haven't stopped.
American Chair Store in Allendale, MI (http://americanchairstore.com/floursacktowels.html) It certainly can't hurt to buy a few and try them out. You may be surprised to find you love them.

Very cool. I'm excited to hear what someone else has to say. They did come highly recommended though so hopefully that person was right. One person can do that and another buy the same thing and hate it so I'll cross my fingers. I wanted to GO there myself since they have restaurant tables and chairs though and figured I'd buy some when I'm there. I may have to just order them myself. The IKEA ones are great but they are all varied blue and white colored with each pack of four having one checked, one wide stripe, one thin striped and then with one wide stripe horizontally across either end. The neat thing though is that they all have hanging loops on one end which is great. Of course, anyone can sew on a loop to hang a towel. :D

I think I will run to Wal-Mart and get some dish towels to do for Christmas. I just realized a bit ago that I was almost there so I have decided on getting the Renae Lindgren Christmas 1 collection. I think some of these would be cute on towels for the holidays. What do you think? do the Wal-Mart towels wash well? I will also put some of the smaller designs on under panties for the girls in the family. Sorry, John. Oh, but don't be forgotten, I am doing monograms and some graphics on boxer shorts also.;)

Great Job!
I Have seen so many projects with the ric-rac that look so good. It has made me look twice at ric-rac ( I always associated it with my mother tacking it onto the hems of our jeans to cover up the fact that we had grown and they were too short.) I think I am goingto pick someup this weekend for some towels I have planned.

Last night I was installing some bedding and window treatments at a clients house. As a thank you gift, I gave her a kitchen towel that I had embroidered "HO HO HO" on. She loved it!
When I showed the towel to designer, she said that she had seen it, but it was upside down and she wanted to know why the client had a towel that said "Off Off Off". :p
