I decided winding my own bobbins would be more economical than buying pre-wound. I just recently learned that my bobbin thread is not the same type thread as my emboridery thread.
I bought a big 'cone' spool of bobbin thread. I did not even think about how was I going to support it.
Any ideas on how to rig it up so I can make bobbins....or do I have to get a thread stand?

I bought a heavy cast stand with a tall thread guide for not very much - about $5, I think. That works for filling bobbins, for embroidery with larger 5000 m king cones (I use so much white and black that I buy BIG!), and also for metallic and other "problem" threads that need to unkink before going through the machine's thread path.

To do in a pinch, I've heard of some people setting it inside a jar and putting the jar up on something higher to thread it into the machine. That would keep it flowing freely and not tangling.
I use Finishing Touch bobbin thread and it comes on regular spools. It really goes a long way.

I have a stand that my dealer suggested I buy when I bought my machine. It was about $5.

This was exactly what I was going to suggest. That's what my dealer told me to use for some specialty thread I bought. I set the thread inside a tall coffee mug and sat that off to the side of my machine. Another time I sat the thread at an angle by putting it in the center of my bobbin holder ring which is rubberized so it stayed in place. Worked great.

Four great answers....thank you to all. I'll look into a stand but I will use a jar for my next bobbin because I am running low.
Thanks for the save!

Has anyone got the bobbinwinder? My girlfriend says it doesn't work with the Viking Se bobbins, they don't have a little ledge inside to make stay put???
Need some imput, please.

I bought the Hemingworth cone thread stand...it has a telescoping middle so your thread doesn't knot up. I think someone put the old telescoping car antenna on a thread stand and now is making a fortune, duh:hmmmm2: Actually I have a quart jar that works almost as good.

excellent ideas. I also use the large cones of bobbin thread (because that's what they sold me when I bought the machine). T least I now have several options to use to wind the bobbins

I've seen and read plenty about those bobbin winders everyone's going nuts over. No, they don't work on Viking bobbins because they aren't made as the others are. If you look at a Viking bobbin they aren't perfectly round from one side to the other - the are smaller on one side. Supposedly there is supposed to be some "fix" coming for the bobbin winders that will allow those with Viking machines to use them.
My opinion of the bobbin winder everyone's going nutso over is that they look incredibly cheap and won't last very long. BUT, that's my opinion. I don't see the need for one since the machine winds the bobbin anyway and if you sit and wind a whole bunch of bobbins before you even start using your machine then you'll always have one ready. I usually do that when I'm running low. I buy the spools of bobbin thread and then a lot of extra bobbins and sit and wind all of them at once. It doesn't take that long and while I'm pulling threads for my designs I'm going to do and getting those in order of the designs I'm winding those bobbins. And if you have the SE then it can wind bobbins while you're using your machine so why buy something else to use?

I did get one of those bobbin winders when it was on sale. It is nice if i need to wind a bobbin of bobbin thread while I'm emb. cuz my machine won't do both at the same time. I haven't gotten industrious enough to wind a bunch ahead of time.
I will say that if you think it will be helpful in having the winder for when doing regular sewing...it's not really. Unless you have 2 spools of the same color thread, you still have to unthread your machine in order to wind the bobbin.
