I hope someone shares, I have a sock hoop and I've never used it - maybe it's because my son's refuse to wear socks with embroidery ----I need a daughter-in-law!!!

I have a sock hoop that my mother gave to me because she never used. I have never used it, either, lol. Guess I am of no help;)

What machine does the sock hoop work on? I'd love to be able to do socks.

The one I had was to fit my old Brother machine, but I can remember what model that one was. I just couldnt seem to fit the socks on there right. Honestly, I think I would just used the tiny hoop for my machine now and use the sticky sulky to keep it in place and flip the design if the cuff of the sock was gonna be folded over.

That is how I do monogramming on turtleneck collars. I use the small hoop and stick it in place. I need to try it for a sock cuff.

I haven't done any socks and haven't got a hoop any smaller than 4x4 but, I have done items that I can't hoop because of their size. I just hoop my stabilizer and mark the center so it's easily visible on the stabilizer even though my hoops have those markings already. Then I mark the center of the area I am putting the design and match the centers of the item and stabilizer then pin it down or do a basting stitch to hold it. Then I do the design that way.
I'm sure using the hoop works much better but that's how my Viking dealer taught me to embroider smaller items and it works great.
I hope that made sense. :D

Since no one else seemed to have experience either, I Googled for a tutorial and found this http://www.geocities.com/~sewntell/socks.html seems to be a regular small hoop.

The hoop I have is the Alphasew Sock Hoopster. I just had to look up the features because I didn't know anything about it, my DH bought it for me and I've never tried it, but it says it works with any 4 x 4 hoop and it looks like it mounts to your hoop bracket & fits inside while holding the sock in place.
Looks like there are several versions on the market with various prices - sorry no experience on which might be best, but I think I have shamed myself into doing this - will post a picture if I am successful.

Yes, that looks like a 4 X 4 hoop. Do they make them smaller? I will google it and see.

The alphasew sock hoopster I have has an inside dimension of 3 x 3.

I googled it and I couldn't find anything smaller than a 4 x 4 for my machine. A viking. I might just need to go to the viking dealer and see.

Just use the smallest hoop you have available for your machine. As for stabilizer, you should probably use a cut away or a fusible no show since the sock is so stretchy. You don't want the stitches to sink into the fabric and disappear. Don't forget the wash away on top so the stitches are even and don't drop.

Viking does have smaller hoops. I found this by going to their website, clicking on accessories and then putting my machine into the drop down box (designer 1) and then chose embroidery from the next list.
Clicking here (http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/us/accessories_search_accessories_search_details.asp? ItemNumber=412573901) will show a picture and description of the one they have an arrow pointing at. For those using a viking, this would probably be the one you might use for socks.

I have embroidered on many a sock just using my 4x4 hoop. I use a cut away stabilizer and then an adhesive to stick the sock where I want it. I fix stitch around the design so I know it will stitch where I want it. You can pin the sock down too. It's a bit tricky but I've done it many times. There's probably an easier way.

I had thought of embroidering some baby socks. I had an idea to try, embroider directly on the stabilizer and hand sew the small design to a sock. I don't know how well it will work, or if it would wash well. I also thought of using iron on applique. Does anyone have any other suggestions to try on little socks?

I have always just pinned the sock or turtleneck. Not hooped it. I have only done the socks a few times. Too much of a pain.

When I inherited my Aunt's sewing machine it came with a tiny hoop. I haven't used it yet but I thought it was for socks and collars. I'm gonna have to try it now!!
I use sticky stabilizer. Works great for socks!!!

I have a brother machine and a "sock hoop". It is oval in shape and the stitch area is just shy of 2.5 x 3.5. I have used light to medium weight cut away and Sulky spray. I then used pins to hold the extra out of the way. I do stretch the socks out some. You have to experiment a bit to get an idea of how much. :)

Oh I embroider my DH socks,,,I put right sock, left sock so he doesn't get them confused...LOL Some of them I put his name on like Lou's sock...He gets a big kick out of wearing them...I have some more genious ideas for some of them...Matter of fact that is what my 2 son-in-laws are getting for Christmas...And since my son chooses to wear his sock inside out so he can wear them twice before they go to the laundry,,,I am going to put clean side, dirty side on his...LOL

Once you get the hang of using the sock easy,,it's not hard at all. I do my GD's socks all the time...I just stick the SE inside the sock and pin the rest out of the way and stitch away...I use a cutaway for socks...

I would use the aersol and just try to lay the sock flat. Streching too much may distort the image.

Better still, I have no idea how to even embroider little onesies! How do you get the item that is SOOO small to lie flat enough to embroider it without getting in the way of the machine..? I want to do stuff for my small baby grandson, but have almost given up on trying to do the front of a tiny shirt. HELP!

Those are not easy. I've done ONE! Not sure if I want to do anymore until my granddaughter grows into the larger sizes. LOL
To do them though you use the iron on stabilizer so it won't stretch at all where you are putting the design. Then hoop the stabilizer and onesie. Then the fun begins ..... you need to pull up all the other parts of the onesie and hold it out of the way so it's not stitched into the design on bottom or top. You can use those black binder clamps they sell in office supply stores to help hold parts of the onesie but be sure they don't fall into your stitch area or you could hit the needle. After I got it all pulled out of the way, I did a basting stitch around the entire hoop before doing the design so it helped hold it in place.
After you are done you'll want to use a soft coverup type of fabric to the back of the design so it's not scratchy on the baby's skin. JoAnn's sells something to use or Floriani sells something called Dream Weave that works great.

I have given up on doing baby onsies myself, The smallest I can do with ease is 12 months size.
As far as socks go, I would love to be able to put a C or an M on my boys socks! That would make it much easier for them to figure out whose is whose!

I've seen it where people have done a stand alone pattern then ironed it to the sock.
You'll have to post photos when you get them done.

I use my small hoop, sticky stableizer and pin the sock in place. Works fine for me! Also, use clear "lingere" bobbin thread, then it doesn't show on the backside. Good luck!

Hi to Everyone . I am new on this message board but trying to figure out how I can make some cute pink fuzzy socks with a breast cancer ribbon it it. I purchased one of the sock tools but never could get it to work.
I do also think I need to stretch the sock some but will keep reading your messages and maybe get the hang of it someday. Thanks for all the input on this site. Verda

The biggest thing I can say is to double-check and triple-check the way you are hooping socks or you may find when you're all done that the design is upside down when you finish. :D

I think the 4X4 with wash away on top and something firm on bottom is best bet. Slow machine and this will help some. I think finding the center of both sock and hooped stabilizer and fix stitch around and pin good and make sure pins are out of way. This is the way I do a hat. I had a sock hoop but could never figure it out. I sent for it I think on Annthegran but even called the invetor and still clumsy.
I may try again in next few days and will let you all know how it worked.
Lots of interest on this subject so worth us getting it the best we can.
Thanks for all inpput
