It's always fun to see what everybody does outside the Forum. On one of the other sewing boards I frequent, we have everything from a rocket scientist to a lawyer to a homeschooler of eight. I'll start -- I have a degree in advertising, but I design and fabricate window treatments and custom home furnishings on a very part-time basis. Kids are grown and I get a lot of playtime these days. Probably just the calm before the storm since it'll be a few years before we have any grandchildren.

Ellen,
I am a retired teacher in Florida having taught for 38 years. Now I do webpages for 7 schools in our district. My fun job is time spent with the 3 grandchildren. I love embroidering so I spend time at the machine on most days. Love the designs from Embroidables and spend time putting them on things for my children.
Our oldest daughter lost her home in Katrina and I spent a year embroidering towels for her 3 new bathrooms with cute designs on every towel, hand towel, and washcloth........24 sets. They are in their home now and enjoying having new things.
The other activity that I've just started participating in is riding as a passenger on our Harley. We have had the bike for 3 years and I've been riding for 2 and love it!!

I quit my real job and started my own sewing biz after having been sewing for 3 months. I know, insane. I do quite well for my one man sweat shop, and that led to the local Viking dealer (all my machines are Viking) asking me to come and work for them part time. That was a couple years ago, and now I somehow got conned into full time and teaching classes. My home biz went to the back burner a bit, but that's okay for now. I'd started it so I could have something established (somewhat) for a little extra income when we had children. Keep your fingers crossed...we just found out we're pregnant a couple weeks ago! Hope this one sticks! :D

I have a real corporate job and only get to sew in the evenings and weekends. I am in the training and development department for a large retailer. It is a great job but I sit here at work thinking about what I'm going to sew when I get home!! :)
One day I would like to quit and open my own business. I do lots of side jobs for people I work with but not enough to pay the bills...yet!

Gosh I feel so inadequate in reading all the neat things you all do for your "real" jobs. Of course, you'll all be jealous because I sit around the house all day long doing nothing but playing on my computer, petting my cat and eating bon bons. HA! Actually, I am home all day but only because I'm disabled and have been since about 2002. Found out two weeks before my wedding that I'll be lucky to see the age of 50 before I'm in a wheelchair. Lucky I had such a fantastic guy I was marrying because he had every chance to run and didn't. He sticks by my side to this day no matter how much pain I'm in.
Oh wait....got sidetracked (I do this alot).... I have no "real" job. :D

I will refrain from making you even more jealous and letting you know my man also does laundry, dishes, cleans, and makes me coffee every morning and then delivers it to my desk in the sewing room with a clean cup before he goes to work too. OH wait. oops. HA! :p
Thank you. Some days I'd much rather be working and not have the pain, trust me. It isn't fun. I do sew but play on my computer much more some weeks.

You're very lucky to be an artist as well. I wish I had some training or natural talent in that area. It would help me come up with ideas much better.

Let see I studied art in school and love working with all mediums, I find sewing and embroidery just an extension of that. When my husband left me with 2 small children age 3 & 5 for a woman he met at work. I had to do something to support us and pay the mortgage. So I opened up my own pet store because of my love for tropical fish. I did that for 15 years worked an average of 120 hr per week 365 days a year. So I put in a 40 year carear in 15 and retired and moved to Maine the year my youngest graduated. My mom was diagnosed with Lymphoma Cancer before my move was even complete. My father left her and filed for divorce so my wonderful husband and I had her move in with us and we provided 24/7 care for her and fought a good fight for 7 years. So I have only really been retired for 3 years. The firs 2 I was stuck in a deep depression, it was like loosing a child because every thing we did for 7 years revolved around her. So I am really enjoying my free time now !
Sorry for the long novel. I guess it all boils down to I consider myself an "Artist"
Being an artist would be very beneficial! I wish a had more of an artist eye...it could help with ideas and putting things together. But I have not artistic ability at all. My stick figures look sick.
Glad to hear you're getting to enjoy your free time now. You deserve it after all you've been through.

My husband and I had a photography business I managed from home until our sons started school at which point I became a full time public school volunteer and enjoyed being involved with them.
When they hit High School - I know, "are you crazy that's when you really need to be home to keep and eye on them" - I worked p/t as a travel agent, enjoyed the benefits of free travel for two years and then was introduced to a health & wellness company that I have worked out of my home since 1993.
As my sons are grown and on their own and my wellness business is self sustaining, I consult for a marketing company when I'm not in the sewing room or at the mall.

I currently work in a quilt shop, selling fabric and sewing machines. I also teach, make samples for the shop and am learning to clean and repair machines. The best part about my job, is that I have access to any machine in the store, including the TOL of 3 different brands.
I had an alterations business for 12 years when my kids were at home, and have worked for 2 other sewing machine dealers.
I have been sewing since I was 10, and it is the only thing I know how to do well enough with which to earn a living.

Wow! It's great finding others who have wonderful husbands, also. After I retired from teaching I had to have both of my knees replaced (at the same time) and my husband had always been helpful but he then became a real angel. After recovering is when I got my new sewing machine and "we" got a Harley. My machine does "everything but cook his dinner" so I have to get up every so often and cook. We have loved riding the motorcyle so it gets us out traveling. I've made my own Harley shirts.......which has been fun. God has been good to give me a loving husband, 2 wonderful daughters and 3 super grandkids to sew for.
It's great hearing about new friends.....thanks for starting this thread.

You are one brave women or just have fantastic willpower. I spend enough money in those stores without being there all day long drooling over what else I can spend my paycheck on. I'd never bring any money home. LOL
we have done a bunch of buss we had pet stores ceramic shops ebay for 10 years embr0idery now and i run a used car place in my home but i have been retired from gm for 20 years !
Please send me a car. Thank you! My husband is driving my car now so I'm stuck at home. His transmission AND brakes both went out in his car a week ago. Yea, I am not pleased that we are looking at putting $2000 into a car that old. :(
Thanks Sew & Viki, Yes I am doing much better I still miss her but it does get easier and I know she would want me to move on and be happy.
Thanks for your kind words and thoughts

It is a dream job, but not hard to keep from spending too much.
It is like having your own huge fabric stash. There is no need to buy fabric until you have a purpose for it. It is always there to look at and feel, and dream about what you might do with it. In fact, I save money this way, because there is no impulse buying.
As far as machines, I get to sew on any Pfaff, Bernina, or Janome that I want to. I would be hard pressed to choose just one of them to buy. This way, I don't have to make a choice.
In addition, I have 2 wonderful employers who are very easy to work for. I almost feel guilty taking a pay check.

I have 2 beautiful daughters in college, who live in our rental house as roommates. Being their mom has been the best thing in my life. I have a wonderful family (indluding Jamie-Deesmom, who is my sister) and her beautiful children. I have done various admin. jobs, worked in insurance, and started a trucking company with my current H. I have always loved all kinds of crafting, sewing, anything creative and artistic. I always just gave away everything or decorated my home with it, never sold anything. I made lots of clothes and dress-up clothes and costumes for my girls when they were little. I have made a couple memory quilts. Since about 18 months ago, I have not had a real job, we shut down the trucking company, and I've been traveling back and forth across the country at the whims of my H. I am thinking of going to nursing school once I get out from under his thumb.

I'd hate to burst your bubble here, but I wasn't looking either. In fact, I "met" him online and it wasn't too long before he moved to my state from where he lived. Neither of us were looking at all and just happened to be on the same website out of the millions there on the internet at the same time, connected somehow with computer discussions because I was in school at the age of 42yrs old to become a Computer Information Specialist and he was in computer repair. I needed help with my terrible computer because I caught my repair guy messing things up in my computer as he was working on it one day trying to "fix" it. BAM! Here we are 7 yrs later and happier than either have ever been. :D Never say never. Nope. You never know what the big guy upstairs has in mind for your direction sometime in your future. ;)
Wow, what a huge variety of people we have in this group.
I am a mother of 2 ( ages 7 and 5) boy and girl respectively. I have a full time job outside of the home. I hold a Masters degree in Social Science.
I am really still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up.

I'm a mom of 2 young adult daughters, one married & one still at home. During their toddler years I was a stay at home mom and when the youngest started school, I started working part time at Jo-Ann Fabrics. Worked at that one for 9 years until the company closed it. Then I was a cashier at a small family owned grocery store. Loved that job and hated to give it, but hubby moved us to Florida.:( Went to work here for about 6 months at Jo-Ann's again, and they closed that one. I've been unemployed for a year now and just got hired for a seasonal temporary job at Bath & Body Works. Hoping it will become a permenant position, as I want to buy a new machine.

I am a speech/language pathologist for Mobile Co. Public Schools. I serve a large public pk-5 school 80% of the time and 3 private daycares/preschools 20% of the time. The best thing is that my children go to one of the preschools/mom's day outs that I serve so I get to peek in and check them out.
In 2005 I graduated with my master's degree in Communication Sciences Disorders and received my CCC's (Certificate of Clinical Competency). I started doing PRN for a local nursing home and home health agency. My second child was born in Feb. so I only get to sew in between meals, baths, etc.
For example, I am stitching a bag for my assistant principal, typing and watching the kids in the tub...glad the house is really small and I can see all things from my stool!!

Eventually I want to go back to school for radiology but cannot not do that until the 3 yro is in school. He was a bit of an oops so changed my plans a bit. Hubby was 49 when we had him. I am a foster parent and respite provider for severally mentally, physically and medically fragile children. I love it and have been doing it for 20 years. I also paint murals of all kind. I'm thinking about starting up a small business doing small emroidery jobs and painting murals. Painting is actually above embroidery right now. (Mainly becuase I'm still learning embroidery and it's more work than fun. So many questions and "rules"!

Hi...what a fun thread!!! I am a registered nurse by profession (to pay for my embroidery habit!!!) I have worked a number of different jobs in my lifetime including a waitress at a driven-in; a library page; toy department stock person at Kmart at Christmas time (that was nuts); line seamstress for Jantzen; foster parent; environmental services tech; pharmacy courier and then I grew up and became a nurse! Sewing and machine embroidery are my passion and I have a small home business around that, but it doesn't pay enough to quit my day job...YET!!! In stitches...Mary
I am a law student and I work as a clerk in our municipal court. I "hope" to graduate in May (god willing-one more semester) But I find myself pitching in at other places...I have worked bridal shows for a former employer this year because they had no one trained and most recently I have signed on to run the register during the day after thanksgiving sale at the jewlery store my husband manages. The outlet mall where his store is opens at MIDNIGHT that morning. I have heard horror stories about crazed shoppers last year (My husband was hit by a car in the parking lot and and elderly gentlman was trampled and suffered a broken wrist-be careful when you shop this week!) so I am bracing myself for the worst. It all makes me appreciate my nice desk and wall of pictures of nieces and nephews all that more.

I am a stay-at-home, work at home mom, to a 15 year old, a 5 year old, and an almost 3 year old.
For "mad money" i pick up another 5 year old, and a 12 year old from school to add to the madness around here.
While they are at school, my3 year old and I make handbags, and childrens belts, and pillowcases, and aprons, and do alterations, and quilt, etc, etc. I am a junkie for something new! I love to try my hand at new things, but I don't particularly enjoy apparel sewing.
I got my start in sewing in high school home ec. I got my start in monogramming when I was pregnant with my first:)

I am a stay at home mom as well. I have 5 children: 9yrs, 6years, 3 years, and two little angels. I love to embroider for the whole lot of them! We just moved so my machine is in storage so I am currently learning to knit. I consider myself a craft-a-holic. I went to a MOPS meeting last week and said I was a craft addict--unfortunately they all thought I said 'crack addict' ---boy what a great first impression I made!!!@

In another life I was an accountant,,,self taught,,,taught myself how to use computers and software...For a couple of years I did data entry for medical records and traveled the state collecting necessary information...then I became an insurance agent and managed an insurance agency...Seemingly over night fibro hit my body including my mind...LOL and I have to leave work 5 yrs ago. Fibro didn't hit over night really,,,it just got worse..
Now I am a stay at homer who has no responsibilities as my children are grown,,,I have all the time in the world to just sew which is my passion, as long as pain permits me to do it...
my dream had always been to retire and sew...I just didn't expect pain to be associated with it...and the only draw back is when you don't work money is a factor in making purchases...LOL
Last year I retired as a home ec teacher after 30 years but I couldn't leave the education scene totally so I was rehired as a coordinator for several programs our high school has. So now I have the best of both worlds, work 2 days a week and the other days play w/my grandson (prepare for his brother who arrives in Jan.) and work on sewing and craft projects. Live is good!

I run my own small business making custom window treatments and other home decor items, and then a few months ago I started working at a luxury linen and bedding store. Although the job is supposed to be part-time, I've been working over 40 hours a week for the past month and a half and it doesn't look like it will slow down anytime soon. I certainly don't mind the extra hours and money, but it means that I'm working A LOT of nighttime hours getting my sewing projects for my customers done. My normal Christmas rush is on and I hate to turn away any business. Oh well, I can always sleep when I'm dead!! hehehe:p
