hi,
the gal i bought my first machine from - babylock esante'2, showed me all kinds of projects she had made. a couple were fiberglas (spelling on that?) screen mesh fabric. available at places like Home Depot and Lowes.

she made two different things. one was a tote shaped bag for the beach. the other was a simple duffle type to hold dirty laundry bag, especially for kids. the fabric was perfect for them because it was airy to keep things from getting stinky (or stinkier ) it was also extremely tough.

what i don't remember is how she stabilized this project. i didn't even know how to embroider then so it all went over my head.

so there's an idea. hope it hasn't been mentioned before, if so - sorry! also can anyone suggest how they would be stabilized? since these projects get more rough and tumble use they need to be tough.

thanks!
elizabeth

hi!
i found some info and project for you at least to see.
a bucket hat and vest with embroidery is at

http://perfectlittlestitches.com/downloads/BugHatBugVest.pdf

here is a little mention at about.com

http://sewing.about.com/b/2006/06/26/sewing-screen.htm

it's really difficult to find information on this. it was big about 8 years ago when i got my first babylock. at least when you see the hat and vest you can see it is simply sewn like anything else. the patterns look the same as any other. you may burn the edges to seal. think you can seal fiberglass, like nylon? well i'll go see. not much else to do

I've seen it done before as a vest and bag. The lady who had made them used some adorable bugs from another site. I think you can just use water soluable on the top and bottom and then when you sew things together, do it with a french seam.

I was wondering if you have to use a special sewing needle in the embroidery machine for this project. The site doesn't say. It would also seem to me that the thread would shread from the fiberglass material. Let us know if you try it Elizabeth. Pictures too!!!

Hi!
First let me say that I have not ever used fiberglass mesh before. Saying that, I think that a Universal needle (slightly rounded tip) would probably work. I tend to use Schmetz brand needles and they have a Jeans needle that has a medium size ball tip that would probably work very well. You definitely want the needle to go between the mesh and not cut through it.
I hope this helps.

Thank you Jennifer for the info. I only have Schmetz brand needles. They are great. I think I'll wait for someone else to try this project first and see what they think and how they liked it.

I made a "sea shell bag" out of polyester screen. I bought the screen at the Hardware store.

I've also made the sea shell/tee-pee bags out of screen but didn't add any embroidery. Just a zipper and ribbon for the handle. If ccdoster and I can figure out how to add a picture...maybe we can add those. I've seen vests and beach bags before and they always look great. I just used a universal needle and had no problems.

I forgot to mention the screen I bought was a polyester. You don't have to buy fiberglass screen you can get the polyester kind.
